This position is accountable for the design of complex traffic control systems, highway illumination and signing and for the investigation, study, and recommendation of action to increase highway capacity and safety. This position performs the duties of the Section Head during that person’s absence.

Possession of a current Arkansas license* to practice professional engineering. Experience in traffic engineering. Thorough knowledge and understanding of electrical and electronic principles, and traffic sign equipment operation and optimization. Effective leadership and communication skills. Good human relations techniques. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to interpret and apply Department policies and procedures.

- Investigate, compile data, analyze, and develop recommendations for traffic operation improvements.
- Review and prepare design plans which include specifications, material quantities and cost estimates.
- Evaluate new materials and equipment to be used in projects for the installation of traffic control devices.
- Write traffic control device special provisions and specifications.
- Provide traffic engineering expertise to various Divisions, Districts, and local government.
- Function as the Section Head in his/her absence.

- The Department will consider applicants with Professional Engineering licenses from other states, with the condition that a reciprocal Arkansas license be obtained within 180 days of hire. Failure to obtain the Arkansas license within this time period may result in immediate termination. Candidates are responsible for verifying eligibility for reciprocity with the Arkansas PE Board before accepting a position.
