Primarily responsible for the day-to-day clinical operations of an assigned area with regard to patient care management, resource management, fiscal management, knowledge and adherence to TJC, federal and state regulations. Participates in direct care as needed, with the remaining time involving managerial tasks. Collaborates with other Directors and departments in sharing of staff and resources, as well as assists in the cross training of the staff. Assumes the leadership role in individual area of expertise and for projects as assigned. Assumes, under the direction of the Laboratory, responsibility for patient specimen testing, quality control, quality improvement, and equipment maintenance.

Work Schedule

Position has 24 hour accountability for Department. Flexible schedule to cover all shift and weekends, as hospital needs demand.

Primary Duties

Managerial Tasks:

  • Assists in the overall operation of the hospital through active participation in projects aimed at achieving the hospitals mission and incorporates the values of the hospital in day-to-day activities.
  • Uses data, planning, communication and education to improve performance.
  • Supports a safe, quality environment for patients and staff.
  • Assists in the selection of staff, equipment, supplies and goods, for the running of the hospital, and caring for patients, with goals of quality and cost efficiency.
  • Communicates with staff and physicians on administrative issues and follows-up to bring closure to such issues.
  • Operates within budgetary parameters.
  • Responsible for appropriate staffing levels to accommodate patient acuity and volume.
  • Assumes a leadership role in the maintenance of the patient-focused care delivery system.
  • Plans and Develops annual competency reviews of staff and assists in staff development in collaboration with the Education Department.
  • Supports the multi-skilled worker environment (i.e., cross training).
  • Assists staff in problem-solving and work issues.
  • Responsible for hiring competent staff for the department.
  • Responds to issues of harassment and discrimination per company policy.
Completes employee evaluation(s) in a timely manner per company policy.
  • Patient Care:

  • Actively participates in administering patient care and management of related service.
  • Coordinates the admission, discharge and transfer of patients in collaboration with other team leaders.
  • Assists families and patients by teaching the skills and information necessary for successful post-discharge care, incorporating age-specific criteria and assessment of readiness to learn.
  • Assures that patient equipment and supplies are available and in working order.
  • Participates in performance improvement activities such as patient satisfaction, physician satisfaction, and staff satisfaction performing surveys as necessary.
  • Identifies and implements corrective actions as necessary. Monitors annual quality indicators for compliance to standards.
  • Applies the knowledge of growth and development to appropriate patient populations.
  • Maintains personal responsibility for professional growth and development.
  • Ensures the provision of a safe and comforting environment.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Maintains universal precautions.
  • Performs Point of Care procedures in a timely manner according to established policy and procedure. Documents required information and complies with all Point of Care quality control standards.

    Staff/Unit Responsibilities:

  • Delegates appropriately to non-licensed staff in accordance with job descriptions, license requirements, and standards of practice.
  • Utilizes resources in an efficient and cost effective manner.
  • Participates in peer review.
  • Participates in developing other staff and affiliating students.
  • Maintains and develops own professional competencies.
  • Maintains and promotes a team spirit through active cooperation and collaboration.
  • Assists in interdepartmental service coordination.
  • Actively participates in the Performance Improvement and Utilization Review program.
  • Assumes a leadership role in the maintenance of the patient-focused care delivery system.
  • Assists in directing and guiding staff in the coordination of unit operations.
  • Supports the multi-skilled worker environment (i.e., cross training).
  • Demonstrates willingness to staff other areas of the hospital as needed.
Qualifications
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program required. BSN strongly preferred, MSN preferred.
  • Licensure/Certification: Registered Nurse with current state licensure or licensure from a state within the Nursing Compact required. BLS certification required at time of hire. Successful completion of AHA-approved course in ACLS within 30 days of employment required for all experienced RNs in all nursing areas. Certifications are to be renewed by the recommended renewal date on the certification documentation.
    • RCIS required for Cath/EP Lab Directors within six months of eligibility. Limited Specialty License required within two months of acquiring RCIS.
    • PALS or ENPC certification required for Emergency Department Director within 6 months of employment.
  • Experience: Minimum of three years continuous clinical experience in a critical/acute care setting required. Minimum of two years recent management experience strongly preferred.
  • Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Ability to manipulate various types of electronic and clinical equipment, adjust and troubleshoot monitoring equipment, IV infusions, and computer equipment. Ability to operate specialty equipment related to area of expertise and to perform computer tasks at a "users" level.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Must possess the ability to interact and communicate in English, both orally and written, with all levels of staff, physicians, patients, and families in an effective manner, exhibiting tact, enthusiasm and patience. Must be sensitive to cultural and bilingual issues. Must possess attributes inspiring others which includes functioning as a role model.
  • Essential Physical Requirements: Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Ability to stand and to walk for long periods of time. Ability to lift/push/pull patients to transport and/or reposition. Ability to lift and carry equipment and supplies of 25 pounds or more. Must have corrected vision and hearing within normal range. Must have the ability to work under stressful conditions and irregular hours.
  • Essential Cognitive Abilities: Possesses the ability to comprehend and interpret complex clinical subject matter related to specialty and calculate in apothecary and metric systems for drug administration. Must possess the ability to document appropriate clinical information. Has the ability to interpret rules/regulations/accrediting and licensing standards sufficiently for implementation. Demonstrates ability to analyze processes and develop/implement solutions/action plans. Demonstrates knowledge of evidence-based practice and ability to implement appropriate standards. Maintains concentration and organization while dealing with multiple issues. Possesses the ability to analyze data and formulate plan of action.
  • Essential Sensory Requirements: Ability to respond to patient/family needs by interpreting verbal and non-verbal expressions. Ability to collect sensory data, analyze political dynamics, and intervene appropriately.
  • Exposure to Hazards: Requires exposure to communicable diseases and potentially contaminated body fluids and bio-hazardous materials. OSHA risk factor: Category 1. Potential risk of physical injury due to moving machinery and supplies.
  • Other: Knowledgeable of the mission, vision, and values of the hospital. Operates within the concept of patient-focused care. Evolves into an effective team member. Must adhere to dress code, good grooming, and personal hygiene habits. Cognizant of and conforms to all hospital policies and procedures.
