The Public Health Nurse (Schools) provides services as part of the School Health Bureau, Public Health Division in the Department of Human Services. DHS . DHS is filling multiple vacancies for this position. This Public Health Nurse (Schools) will provide school health services in one or more school clinics while traveling within Arlington to schools, public health clinics, other Department of Human Services Units, and to community buildings to facilitate services or to participate in meetings or task forces. The population served is culturally diverse.

Licenses/Certifications: Must be licensed or eligible for license by endorsement to practice professional nursing as a Registered Nurse in Virginia. The Board of Nursing may issue a license by endorsement to an applicant who has been licensed as a professional nurse by another state, the District of Columbia, or a United States possession or territory.
Desirables: Preference maybe given to candidates with additional background and/or one or more of the following:
Applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at multiple locations other than the primary worksite.
If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must provide or authorize Arlington County to obtain a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent on a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates who are selected for employment. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
A pre-hire federal background check and State of Virginia Central Registry check will be performed.

Responsibilities
Providing public health nursing services to assigned school age population including:
- Assesses the health care needs of students.
- Identifies medically at-risk students and creates care plans for these students.
- Refers children with health problems/needs to care resources as appropriate.
- Provides health education to students, parents, and staff on a variety of topics, including Family Life Education.
- Reviews students’ health documentation to ensure compliance with school entry requirements.
- Attends occasional evening clinics, events or trainings.
- Collaborates with the Community Health Protection Bureau in case finding and investigation.
- Collaborates and consults with community in areas of health promotion as appropriate.
- Participates in the Public Health Division’s emergency preparedness and response activities.
- Works with the School Health Aid to ensure an effective team approach to student services.
- Provides routine first aid care and emergency care to students in the absence of the School Health Aide.
- Provides clinical guidance to the School Health Aid and oversees student care.
- Establishes effective communication with parents, school and DHS staff.
Minimums
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing plus some work experience as a Registered Nurse (RN);
- Some experience as a Registered Nurse;
- Current valid license to work as a Registered Nurse in the state of Virginia*; and
- Current certification of CPR/BLS for Healthcare Providers or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
- If eligible from another state, the selected candidate will be allowed 60 days to obtain Virginia license.

- Master's degree in nursing, Public Health, or a related field;
- Public health work experience in a school setting;
- Pediatric nursing experience; and/or
- Bilingual in English/Spanish.

Hours and locations:
- Monday through Friday with core hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- This is a year-round position.
- Primary work location will be at one or more Arlington Public School clinics.
- Meetings and trainings will be held at the School Health Bureau’s main office (2110 Washington Blvd.) or at other locations throughout Arlington County.
- Occasional evening hours for other clinics, events, and meetings (locations may be throughout Arlington County).
- You cannot concurrently receive behavioral health services from Arlington County Community Service Board (CSB) programs while employed in an Arlington County CSB program (exception Crisis Intervention services).
- At least 24 months must have passed between receipt of CSB services from Arlington County and employment in an Arlington County CSB program.
