POSTED ON 3/29/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 4/26/2025
Job Description

This is a one-year, full-time, paid Internship Program

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Arlington County requires all applicants to thoroughly complete each section of the application, including prior job responsibilities, duties, and supplemental questions. While you may attach a resume, it will not replace a completed application. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

The Department of Environmental Services (DES) is hiring an Intern to work in the Office of Sustainability and Environmental Management as a member of the Stormwater Management Team. The intern will be responsible for supporting the County’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit and Stormwater Management Ordinance requirements specifically related to the inspection and maintenance of the County’s growing inventory of stormwater management facilities. The important purpose of these facilities is to mitigate the impacts of stormwater runoff from new homes, businesses, schools, apartment buildings and other development types.

This is an excellent learning opportunity in the growing field of municipal stormwater management, working with a County undergoing robust redevelopment. There will be opportunities to interact with multiple program staff to learn about what they do, including accompanying staff on field work and inspections, alongside opportunities for special projects and training to grow your professional skill sets and subject matter expertise.

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of a mentor, responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing, tracking, reviewing, cataloging, and delegating emails that are submitted to the County’s primary email inbox regarding stormwater inspections;
  • Reviewing and downloading inspection reports submitted by owners of stormwater management facilities from the County’s website;
  • Filing the reports and photos using Adobe Acrobat;
  • Searching and attaching these reports to the correct facilities in the County’s comprehensive asset management system, Cartegraph;
  • Meeting regularly with the supervising program manager;
  • Participating in team meetings, training opportunities and field work with senior staff; and
  • Other MS4 permit support tasks as assigned.

Examples of special projects and training opportunities from previous internships include:

  • Working with the stormwater public engagement team to produce GIS story maps along with educational videos for topics ranging from COVID-19 volunteer stream monitoring protocols, and stream buffer management to permeable paver maintenance and urban soil profile rebuilding;
  • Obtaining Virginia Department of Environmental Quality Stormwater Management Inspector certification;
  • Conducting research and GIS spatial analyses to map impervious surfaces in Arlington as well as locations of stormwater management facilities; and
  • Reporting biological stream monitoring data to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
