The Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue is seeking a Tax Specialist II to supervises a team of Tax Specialists in the Compliance Division of the Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue (COR). This position will evaluate managerial processes to ensure compliance with relevant statutes and regulatory codes and will also assist in tax planning and reporting, including policy implementation and procedures enhancement. Additionally, this position will schedule, assign, monitor and evaluate work of staff and provide technical advice and guidance to staff and taxpayers.

Work Hours: Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with telework opportunities available upon supervisor approval.
Work Type: The Arlington Commissioner of Revenue offers a hybrid work environment and generally permits employees to work in part, remotely. The individual in this position should be prepared to initially spend most of their work hours on-site at the Commissioner’s office in Arlington and would be eligible for hybrid work in the future as appropriate.

This position will evaluate managerial processes to ensure compliance with relevant statutes and regulatory codes and will also assist in tax planning and reporting, including policy implementation and procedures enhancement. Responsibilities
Specific duties include:
- Providing Virginia State Income Tax return services to taxpayers;
- Performing supervisory, coordination and related activities;
- Supervising the administration of vehicle personal property tax assessment and enforcement;
- Training new employees in tax return preparation;
- Conducting system development and enhancement to ensure testing and process implementation works accordingly;
- Monitoring and overseeing the compliance of individuals with their tax obligations by reviewing tax returns, verifying accuracy, identifying potential discrepancies or non-compliance, conducting investigations as necessary, and taking appropriate enforcement actions to address any violations;
- Serving as the secondary security administrator for the Integrated Revenue Management system as well as the technical coordinator for the license plate reader system; and
- Auditing tax account adjustments daily to ensure compliance with applicable tax laws, regulations and established office policies and procedures including reviewing financial records, conducting examinations and determining tax liabilities.
- Analytical skills to solve complex tax-related issues;
- Detail-oriented to assist taxpayers with their tax related matters; and
- Working knowledge of tax law.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Completion of the requirements for graduation from a standard senior high school or vocational school, a GED certificate, or the equivalent; and
- Significant experience conducting property tax investigations, researching and analyzing taxpayer information and/or preparing Federal/State tax returns.
Desirables: Preference will be given to applicants with one or more of the following:
- Proven track record as a tax specialist or analyst;
- Professional certifications (ex: CPA in the United States);
- experience with Federal/State tax laws and regulations;
- Experience in managing extensive volumes of accounting paperwork for an organization; and/or
- Bilingual ability (English/Spanish).
