What are the responsibilities and job description for the Business Tax Inspector I position at Arlington County, VA?

The Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue is seeking a Business Tax Inspector I to perform administrative and public contact work related to enforcing the Business Tax License Law and computing and collecting taxes for other specific types of taxes including custodial taxes (meals, transient occupancy, short-term rental, cigarette tax). This position ensures taxpayer compliance with current state statutes and County ordinances and assists the public by explaining taxpayers code regulations and procedures.
Specific duties include:
- Researching source documents to identify potential delinquent accounts;
- Scheduling and conducting field inspections of commercial establishments;
- Administering the enforcement of the business license law;
- Issuing licenses, notices, summons and reliefs;
- Conducting special research on licenses;
- Determining classifications, computes liability, determines penalties, and explains tax laws to taxpayers;
- Referring to, interpreting, applying and enforcing state and local tax codes and regulations;
- Processing all annual returns, correspondence, and customer inquiries during tax filing and payment deadlines;
- Processing applications determining classification and calculating tax/fee amounts; and Performing other related duties as required or as directed by Supervisor.

The ideal candidate will have the following:
- Excellent communication skills to answer calls from business tax call center;
- Writing skills to respond to email and correspondence sent to our office;
- Interpersonal skills to explain rules and procedures clearly; and
- Problem solving skills to apply standard procedures to clearly defined problems.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Completion of the requirements for graduation from a standard senior high school or vocational school, a GED certificate, or the equivalent; and Some experience in tax code interpretation and application. Specific experience in Virginia and Arlington County tax codes and procedures.

Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the education requirement. Additional education may substitute for the experience requirement.
Desirables: Preference will be given to applicants with one or more of the following:
- Working knowledge of Virginia and Arlington County business tax codes;
- College course work in accounting and/or taxation;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; and/or Bilingual in English/Spanish.
Special Requirements
Background Check: A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates selected for employment. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
Additional Information
Work Hours: Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with telework opportunities available upon supervisor approval.
Work Type: The Arlington Commissioner of Revenue offers a hybrid work environment and generally permits employees to work in part, remotely. The individual in this position should be prepared to initially spend most of their work hours on-site at the Commissioner’s office in Arlington and would be eligible for hybrid work in the future as appropriate.
