The Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue is seeking a Business Tax Inspector III to perform specialized administrative and public contact work related to enforcing business taxes. This position will assist the Business Tax Section Coordinator oversee the day-to-day administration of programs, such as restaurant meals tax and business tangible tax.
Specific duties include:
- Working with tax documents and internal company ledgers, spreadsheets, and other financials to determine proper assessment, understanding the complexities of tangible tax as it relates to the business, such as categories and value of filings based on information collected from customer;
- Distributing business license and business tangible emails during peak times;
- Serving as team lead and providing guidance and assistance to other Business Tax Inspectors and staff;
- Assisting in reviewing and evaluating projects, programs and/or services for trends and patterns for the different business tax types;
- Assisting business owners with processing applications and with questions regarding business tax regulations and procedures;
- Researching complex tax issues and developing recommendations for resolution; and Providing back-up for the Business Tax Section Coordinator in their absence.

The ideal candidate will have the following:
- Considerable knowledge of the codes, laws, regulations, and policies pertinent to the specific area of business tax;
- Excellent communications skills to Inform businesses and individuals on their specific fiscal duties and the legislation and regulations involving fiscal processes, such as tax duties;
- Problem solving skill to assist business owner with tax regulations and procedures; and
- Experience exercising independent judgment to plan and execute assignments.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Some college in accounting, tax law, business operations, and auditing from an accredited institution; and Considerable experience in the investigation, research, and reconciliation of taxable accounts, with preference for experience at the Business Tax Inspector I or II levels or similar experience.
Substitution: Additional education may be substituted for experience. Additional experience may be substituted for education.
Desirables: Preference will be given to applicants with one or more of the following:
- Experience in recording and summarizing business and financial transactions and analyzing, verifying, and reporting the results;
- Ability to provide advice on the implications for businesses or individuals on decisions regarding tax declaration based on tax legislation;
- Experience managing the accounts and financial activities to ensure all information and calculations are accurate; and Ability to work with the standard programs contained in Microsoft Office at a proficient level.
Special Requirements
Background Check: A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates selected for employment. Additional Information
Work Hours: Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with telework opportunities available upon supervisor approval.
Work Type: The Arlington Commissioner of Revenue offers a hybrid work environment and generally permits employees to work in part, remotely. The individual in this position should be prepared to initially spend most of their work hours on-site at the Commissioner’s office in Arlington and would be eligible for hybrid work in the future as appropriate.
