Join the Parks Department and become part of the team that is responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled trade work with a primary focus on electrical work. This position may also perform other trade-related tasks, including general maintenance and repair projects. The ideal candidate will have strong problem-solving skills and pay attention to detail and accuracy.
The salary range for this position is $24.61 to $34.18 per hour, with an expected starting pay between $25.70 and $27.01 per hour, depending on qualifications (DOQ).
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
- Assist the electrician in the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical wiring, fixtures, lighting, LED upgrades, ballasts, panels, breakers, poles, outlets, switches, troubleshooting circuits, trenching, bending and installing conduit, and make repairs on the electrical systems of District buildings and site installations.
- Performs rough and finish carpentry work, including building alterations, repairs, remodeling, and maintenance.
- Assists skilled trades (electrician, carpenter, HVAC, plumbing, and pool specialists) with installations, maintenance, and repairs.
- Completes general building upkeep tasks such as patching, painting, plastering, staining, and concrete work (forming, pouring, finishing).
- Supports special events by setting up/taking down displays and transporting equipment and supplies.
- Performs seasonal duties like snow removal and pool maintenance, including handling chemicals and pool filtration systems.
- Operates Park District vehicles, lifts, specialized service equipment, and small engine-powered tools.
- Purchases supplies as needed and submits reports to the Park Operations Supervisor - Trades.
- Maintains a clean, organized work environment and cleans work sites upon project completion.
- Follows all safety policies, procedures, and employee handbook guidelines to ensure safe job performance.
- Attends work regularly and performs additional duties as assigned that may be considered essential.
This position will need to have a strong knowledge of:
- General trades including electrical, plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, painting, and construction.
- Using, maintaining, and performing routine maintenance on hand and power tools and equipment.
- Safety protocols, chemical handling, and safe equipment operation.
- Reading and interpreting manuals, blueprints, and written instructions.
- Effective time management, planning, and project follow-through without close supervision.
- Communication skills, both written and verbal; maintains professionalism in challenging situations.
- Basic math, measure accurately, and operate aerial equipment safely.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND TRAINING

- High school graduate or G.E.D. with experience in electrical maintenance and/or electrical construction
- Minimum of two to three years’ experience in one or more building or shop trades
- Or, any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training
- Valid Illinois Class C Driver’s license within nine months of hire
- CPR and AED Certification required within six months of employment
