Human Resources announces an opening for the position of Lead Adult ESL Specialist. This is a twelve-month administrative position, grade E-5.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK
The Lead Adult ESL Specialist has a key leadership role in assisting the REEP Supervisor in the planning, development, provision, and evaluation of adult English as a Second Language (ESL) programs offered through the Arlington Education and Employment Program (REEP). In addition to program-wide leadership responsibilities, the Lead Adult ESL Specialist directly supervises all aspects of programming at the Syphax Education Center- SEC and the Arlington County Detention Facility (ACDF), serving a quarterly enrollment of 400 students.
Program-wide Responsibilities:
- Assist the REEP Supervisor in day-to-day program management, strategic planning, program evaluation, and acquisition of grant resources to enhance the program.
- Collaborate with the instructional leadership team to plan, develop, and conduct REEP staff development training that focuses on promoting student achievement.
- Provide leadership to the instructional team on curriculum and assessment planning, development, delivery, and evaluation.
- Oversee student evaluation of the program, including development of evaluation tools and data analysis to enhance programming.
- Coordinate research and development projects that focus on program enhancement and staff development.
- Manage program-wide instructional resources
- Represent and promote the REEP Program by contributing to local, state, and national events and collaborations as well as by responding to program inquiries.
- Teach adult ESL classes, as needed.
- Coordinate and supervise all aspects of programming, including Integrated Education and Training (IET) courses, at the Syphax Education Center (SEC).
- Supervise REEP programming conducted at the Arlington County Detention Facility (ACDF).
- Recruit, hire, train, support, supervise, and evaluate instructional staff.
- Supervise office staff in the coordination of student outreach, intake testing, registration, and services (scholarships, vouchers, book sales, and guest speakers) as well as data collection and management as required by REEP’s multiple funding sources.
- Manage/resolve student, teacher, and student-teacher issues, as needed.
- Perform related work, as required and requested by the REEP Supervisor.
- Knowledge of effective instructional and assessment principles, practices, and methods related to adult second language learning, including learner-centered approaches and instructional technology.
- Knowledge of effective professional development practices and methods.
- Evidence of strong oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills that foster collaboration and represent the program in a professional manner.
- Ability to develop, plan, and direct the implementation of educational programs, and to articulate program goals, needs, and strengths to APS, the business community, school community, and school and state officials.
- Ability to plan, organize, and direct work of staff who report to the REEP Supervisor.
- Ability to explain and interpret policies, procedures and programs to the community, administrators, and school personnel.
- Familiarity with online collaborative learning platforms.
- Ability to engage in problem solving and manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Evidence of openness to new ideas and sensitivity to the needs of part-time staff and community volunteers.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule (including evenings and occasional weekends).
- Awareness of local, state, and national issues and events that impact immigrant families.
- Master's degree in Linguistics, ESL, or related field from an accredited college or university.
- Considerable experience teaching adult immigrants and refugees.
- Experience training and supervising professional staff.
- Experience developing ESL curriculum and/or assessments.
- Experience with program planning as well as management of special projects and grants.

Salary range of $60,047 to $98,418 based upon 22/23 pay plan.
Newly hired employees with previous experience in their field may receive salary credit for up
to five years of experience related to the job being filled.
