Yard Supervisor
Arnold Lumber Company is a full-service lumberyard offering building materials, a full line of masonry supplies, cabinetry, and a Kitchen & Bath Design Center Showroom with locations in Bristol, Wakefield, Westerly, and the Headquarters based in West Kingston.

PURPOSE:
As the Yard Supervisor, you are responsible for the overall supervision of the Yard ensuring an efficient, safe, and organized operation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervise and maintain an organized and logical yard operation.
- Plan manpower needs to be based upon business demands and monitor overtime hours and dollars.
- Assigns tasks ensuring efficient allocation of labor maximizing productivity and work-life balance.
- Service team members and customers in a polite, courteous, friendly, and professional manner.
- Motivate, coach, and train forklift operators.
- Responsible for general housekeeping to ensure our warehouse/yard standards are met safely and professionally in the yard.
Certification and Regulations
- Ensure that all required certifications and training of operators are up to date.
- Daily Forklift Pre-trip inspections and accompanying documentation
- Maintain OSHA Forklift Operator certification and follow all safety regulations required by OSHA and Arnold Lumber Company.
- Maintain any other required records of certification and compliance as required by Company Policy, OSHA, or any other governing body.
Training and Cross-Training
- Motivates, trains, and develops a productive cohesive team.
- Continually trains employees in the safe use and maintenance of tools and equipment.
- Empowers employees to take ownership in the use, maintenance, and safety of all tools and equipment.
Inventory and Material Handling
- Oversee inventory quality and ensure accurate quality control.
- Conduct quality control inspections, document findings/observations, and work to continuously improve.
- Utilize Bistrack and WMS System to ensure proper procedure and maintain required training.
- Ensure all Operational Sales, Credits, and Transfers are executed according to SOP.
- Develop and maintain SOP to check loads to ensure On-Time In-Full deliveries are being made (OTIF).
Maintain Department Building and Equipment
- Responsible for maintaining the upkeep and maintenance of capital investments (i.e. building property, equipment, etc.)
- Ensure that the proper tools are available to each employee. Orders tools/replacement parts on time.
- Responsible for general housekeeping to ensure our warehouse/yard standards are met safely and professionally in the yard.
- Develops the building and grounds maintenance schedule, as assigned.
Safety Protocols
- Ensure that all work in the Yard is completed Safely and accurately.
- Ensures that employees are provided with and consistently use approved safety equipment.
- Comply with all OSHA standards, inclusive of compliance regarding wearing appropriate safety gear and seatbelts
- Conducts monthly safety meetings and consistently executes all safety policies. Directs supervisors and employees ensuring safe working practices are adhered to while maintaining a safe working environment.
- Conducts safety/yard inspections, documents findings/observations, and distributes to the appropriate management personnel.
OTHER JOB DUTIES:
- Demonstrate, train, and reinforce Customer Service Skills with Team.
- Ability to read, participate in, and execute annual Budgets and follow Monthly Profit and Loss statements.
All other duties – Perform all other duties as assigned including carrying out responsibilities, performing duties, using skills, and working in conditions necessary to perform all assigned tasks
Qualifications
LEADERSHIP
- Plan delegate and control work assignments.
- Review salaries/wages of others and recommend changes as appropriate.
- Recommend new hires, promotions, transfers, demotions, disciplinary action, and terminations of employment.
- Conduct performance reviews.
COMPETENCIES/SKILLS
- OSHA 10-certified
- Freight management
- Basic math skills
- Operate machinery
- Conscientious about the timeliness of assignments and quality of work product.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to articulate recommendations concisely.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite as well as experienced in POS/ERP Systems.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING CONDITIONS
- Must be able to lift up to 80 lbs. above head.
- Stand, sit, bend, kneel, and do repetitive lifting for 8 hrs.
- Climb stairs while carrying heavy objects
- Works in inclement weather conditions.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- 3 years of experience in a management position with P & L literacy.
- Experience in distribution, building maintenance, and yard management strategies.
- Strong relationship and team-building experience
- Professional standard of conduct, demonstrating confidential, ethical, and trustworthy behavior.
- A passion for getting things done, and an appreciation for details, and a belief in continual process improvement.
- Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems.
- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
