Reading Specialist Job Description
Instructional Coaching Responsibilities
Conduct observations of literacy instruction in classrooms. Provide targeted feedback and modeling of instructional strategies.
Facilitate collaborative lesson planning and professional learning communities (PLCs).
Lead literacy-focused professional development sessions.
Collaborate with teachers to align instruction with curriculum standards (TEKS).
Monitor and analyze student performance data to guide instruction.
Provide support and resources for classroom literacy centers or stations.
Mentor new teachers and support struggling veteran teachers.
Student Intervention Duties
Identify students needing literacy intervention through data analysis. Implement research-based literacy intervention programs. Monitor student progress regularly and adjust interventions accordingly.
Maintain accurate records of intervention sessions and progress monitoring data.
Communicate student intervention progress regularly to teachers, administrators, and parents.
Collaborate with special education, ESL, and gifted and talented staff to coordinate literacy support services.
Train paraprofessionals assisting with interventions.
Testing Responsibilities
Coordinate campus-wide testing schedule and logistics.
Train teachers on MAP testing procedures and administration protocols.
Provide technical support and troubleshooting during MAP testing.
Oversee makeup testing sessions.
Analyze data to identify instructional strengths and gaps for the campus, grade, and individual students. Share MAP data trends with administrators, teachers, and stakeholders.
Generate student data reports for PLC meetings and instructional planning.
Support teachers in using MAP data to inform instructional decisions.
Accelerated Instruction Plan Oversight
Oversee accelerated instruction plans for students who did not meet assessment standards (e.g., STAAR).
Ensure compliance with Texas legislation requiring accelerated instruction.
Document and track student progress toward accelerated instruction goals.
Communicate with families regarding accelerated instruction requirements, progress, and recommendations.
Collaborate with administrators to ensure appropriate staffing and resource allocation for accelerated instruction.
Data Analysis and Reporting Duties
Regularly analyze and interpret literacy assessment data, such as MAP, running records, and benchmarks.
Maintain accurate records of literacy data and intervention.
Create campus-wide literacy portfolios for leadership and decision-making.
Prepare data presentations for campus administration, district personnel, and community stakeholders.
Curriculum and Resource Management
Identify, evaluate, and recommend literacy resources, programs, and materials.
Maintain and organize literacy intervention resources and supplies.
Assist in budgeting and ordering literacy materials and resources.
Provide training on newly adopted literacy resources and curriculum.
Professional Development & Campus Leadership
Attend district and campus literacy meetings and trainings.
Maintain ongoing professional growth through literacy conferences, workshops, and readings.
Communicate regularly with campus administrators on literacy instruction progress and needs.
Facilitate parent literacy workshops or informational meetings.
Serve on campus leadership teams to ensure literacy instruction is prioritized and effective.
Parent and Community Engagement
Communicate regularly with parents regarding student progress in interventions and accelerated instruction.
Plan and facilitate family literacy events or information sessions.
Provide resources and literacy strategies for parents to support reading at home.
Compliance and Documentation
Ensure literacy instruction and intervention compliance with state and district guidelines.
Complete required documentation for RTI, 504, special education, and accelerated instruction programs.
