The Unit Clerk plays a vital role in supporting patient care operations by serving as the central communication point at the nursing station. Working under the direct supervision of the Charge RN or House Supervisor, this role involves both reception and clerical duties to ensure efficient unit workflow. The Unit Clerk is accountable for their performance and is expected to demonstrate professionalism, attention to detail, and strong organizational skills.
Responsibilities:Perform secretarial and reception tasks on the nursing unit.
Act as a communication liaison among staff, patients, and other departments.
Handle phone calls and relay accurate information using professional telephone etiquette.
Accurately document, transcribe, and update records as needed.
Set up and monitor staff pagers and other unit communication systems.
Support the nursing team by maintaining supplies, forms, and unit materials.
Ensure proper functioning of clerical equipment and troubleshoot issues as necessary.
Follow unit-specific protocols and respond appropriately during high-stress situations.
Minimum of 1 year of previous hospital experience in a similar role, or completion of an approved secretarial program (preferred).
High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
Completion of a basic medical terminology course.
Basic computer literacy, typing skills, and clear, legible handwriting.
Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
Professional demeanor with effective prioritization and multitasking abilities.
Good judgment and independent decision-making capability.
Manual dexterity and adequate vision and hearing to perform job duties effectively.
Ability to remain seated for extended periods and work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
Must demonstrate teamwork and reliability.
