Job Description: Unit Clerk
The Unit Clerk performs job duties under the direct supervision of the Unit Charge RN or House Supervisor and reports to the Emergency Department Unit Director. The primary responsibility of the Unit Clerk is to complete reception and secretarial duties on the patient care unit, while also acting as the focal communication source at the nurse's station.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure efficient communication and perform reception/secretarial duties at the nurse’s station.
- Act as a liaison between the nursing staff, physicians, and other team members.
- Perform clerical tasks such as filing, maintaining patient records, scheduling appointments, and assisting with patient intake.
Requirements:
- Experience: At least one year of previous hospital experience as a Unit Clerk, or a graduate of an approved Secretary program (preferred).
- Education: Successful completion of a basic Medical Terminology program; high school graduate or equivalent (preferred).
- Skills:
- Basic computer and keyboard knowledge, with proficiency in data entry.
- Clear and legible handwriting.
- Professionalism: Strong telephone etiquette and ability to handle calls in a professional manner.
- Time Management: Ability to prioritize tasks and work as part of a team, while also being able to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Communication: Effective written, oral, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Accuracy: Proficiency in spelling, grammar, arithmetic, and English usage.
- Manual Dexterity: Ability to handle and operate equipment necessary for Unit Clerk duties.
- Auditory Ability: Ability to perform procedures and communicate effectively with team members and the public, including while using the telephone.
- Vision: Adequate vision to read and document on the medical record and use the computer.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to sit for extended periods of time; capacity to work under stressful conditions.
- Judgment/Decision Making: Demonstrates good judgment and decision-making ability consistent with knowledge and skills.
- Teamwork: Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Special Criteria: Ability to meet specific criteria for the individual nursing unit.
- Additional Responsibilities: Ability to set up and monitor staff pagers.
Job Type: Contract
Pay: $25.00 - $28.00 per hour
Expected hours: 36 per week
Schedule:
- 12 hour shift
- Night shift
