We are seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to join Arts for Learning Maryland. This role will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting principles, and supporting the organization"s financial strategy and reporting needs. The Senior Accountant position is full-time, exempt and reports to the Director of Finance.

Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Senior Accountant to join Arts for Learning Maryland. This role will be responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting principles, and supporting the organization"s financial strategy and reporting needs. The Senior Accountant position is full-time, exempt and reports to the Director of Finance.
Responsibilities Include
- Manage full-cycle accounting operations, including monthly and year-end closings, bank reconciliations, and financial statement preparation
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable processes, ensuring accurate and timely processing of all transactions
- Maintain detailed records of grant funding, restricted donations, and program-specific expenses
- Prepare and analyze budget variance reports and provide insights to program managers
- Develop and maintain internal controls to ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards
- Assist in annual audit preparation and serve as primary contact with external auditors
- Monitor and record investment activities and ensure proper fund accounting
- Supervise A/P and A/R accounting staff and provide mentorship and training
- Prepare financial reports for the Board of Directors and various stakeholders

- Bachelor"s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 5 years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in nonprofit accounting
- CPA desirable
- Proficient knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles
- Experience with fund accounting and grant management
- Strong understanding of IRS regulations regarding 501(c)(3) organizations
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with nonprofit accounting software
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities
- Excellence in managing and mentoring junior staff
- Ability to explain complex financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders
- Professional demeanor and ability to maintain confidentiality
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Financial Edge, or similar)
- Advanced Excel skills including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and complex formulas
- Experience with paperless accounting systems and internal controls
- Knowledge of automated payment systems and banking platforms
