Visual Arts Instructor – African American & Cultural Arts Specialty
Location: Multiple Schools in New Haven, CT Time: 3:00 PM – 5:30 PM (Days and times vary)
About the Opportunity
In celebration of Black History Month and to further enrich our cultural arts programs, we are seeking a passionate and experienced Visual Arts Instructor with a specialty in African American art. This role is ideal for an educator who thrives in dynamic, multi-medium environments and is committed to fostering an inclusive, creative learning atmosphere across various school settings in New Haven.
Position Summary
The successful candidate will:
- Develop and deliver engaging, culturally rich lesson plans that highlight the significance of African American art within the broader context of global cultural traditions.
- Utilize a variety of artistic mediums (e.g., painting, sculpture, digital art, mixed media) to create a comprehensive and inspiring curriculum.
- Work collaboratively with school administrators and fellow educators to integrate cultural arts into existing programs and special events.
- Inspire students to explore and appreciate diverse artistic expressions, with an emphasis on historical and contemporary African American contributions to the arts.
Key Responsibilities
Curriculum Design & Instruction:
- Create lesson plans and activities celebrating Black History Month and exploring African American and cultural art forms.
- Teach all forms of art, emphasizing hands-on projects that engage students in multiple mediums.
- Foster a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages creativity, critical thinking, and cultural appreciation.
- Adapt teaching methods to meet the diverse learning styles and needs of students across different school settings.
Program Coordination:
- Collaborate with school staff to coordinate class schedules and integrate the visual arts program into the broader school curriculum.
- Prepare and manage materials and supplies for classes, ensuring a well-equipped learning environment.
Professional Collaboration:
- Participate in faculty meetings, workshops, and cultural events to continuously enhance teaching practices.
- Contribute to school-wide initiatives promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion through the arts.
Qualifications
- A degree in Fine Arts, Art Education, or a related field is preferred.
Experience & Expertise:
- Demonstrated experience in visual arts, with a strong emphasis on African American art and cultural arts.
- Proficiency in multiple artistic mediums and a proven ability to design interdisciplinary, culturally responsive curricula.
Portfolio & References:
- Applicants must provide a link to samples of their work (portfolio) showcasing expertise in cultural and African American art.
- A minimum of three professional references is required.
Other Requirements:
- Ability to work effectively in diverse educational settings.
- Must pass a comprehensive background check prior to employment.
