Hopkins School, an independent, gender-inclusive, college-preparatory day school in New Haven, Connecticut, with over 700 students in grades 7-12, is seeking a visual arts teacher.

This position includes teaching foundational courses in middle and high school studio art as well as an advanced course in painting. Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching middle school ages and who are flexible in teaching a variety of media. This full-time position also includes contributing to the student experience outside of the classroom, such as coaching a sport or academic team (matched with the candidate’s skills and experience) or working with students in the Academic Support Program.

Full-time faculty members typically serve as an adviser for a group of 6-8 students in one grade; attend department, grade-level adviser, and faculty meetings; maintain verbal and written professional contact with students, colleagues, and families; serve on one faculty committee; chaperone after-school student events; participate in the broader life of the School; and support the school community by setting a positive example in all areas of school life.

  • Possess cultural proficiency in the classroom and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Teach and learn with the curiosity and enthusiasm they hope to cultivate in their students
  • Grow a thriving visual arts program through curricular and extracurricular offerings

Bachelor's degree in visual arts or related field is required; an advanced degree is preferred. Secondary school teaching experience is preferred but not required. Candidates with post-secondary teaching experience will be considered.
