Position Summary
Under the direction of the Transfer/Admit Center Nurse, the Patient Placement Specialist coordinates the assignment of patient admissions. This Patient Placement Specialist performs initial admission screening using approved clinical guidelines to ensure patient admissions and bed assignments are consistent with current policies and procedures. Also works in collaboration with multiple departments within the hospital, participates in bed management meetings with hospital staff, identifies and communicates bed utilization issues, and identifies and reports barriers to patient transfers and admissions efficiency.
As a Patient Placement Specialist, you will have the opportunity to:
- Attend daily meetings to assess staffing, discharges and admissions to the facility.
- Identify available beds and nursing unit acuities to expedite appropriate patient placement which includes coordinating assignment of patient beds within the hospital. using knowledge and appropriate utilization of unit admission criteria.
- Work with physicians and/or staff to prioritize admissions, intra-hospital transfers, and inter-hospital transfers.
- Ensure appropriate coordination of room turnover in collaboration with Central Transport (CTD) and Environmental Services dispatch staff and supervisors.
- Establish prioritization of workload with resources available, including use of multi-line phone and passing along information appropriately.
- Identify trends related to bed utilization, transfer and movement through facility and report barriers to patient throughput to management.
- Prepare statistical reports related to bed utilization and transfers and assist management in collecting data for quality improvement activities related to function.
Qualifications
Education
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Associate degree preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years progressively responsible administrative or patient care experience in a clinical or acute care setting is required.
- Knowledge of medical terminology required.
Certifications
- CNA: Certified Nursing Assistant certified by the Oregon State Board of Nursing, preferred.
