Ashburn Farm - Head Coach Job Description
The Ashburn Farm Barracudas Swim Team (ABF) program seeks one experienced Head Coach for the 2025 summer swim season. The Barracudas are a well-established team in Ashburn Farm in Loudoun County, Virginia, competing in the Colonial Swim League. The right candidate will be an energetic, motivated individual to lead approximately 200 swimmers of all ability levels in our developmental and competitive summer swim league and coordinate and manage our assistant and junior coaches.
The ideal candidate would have head coaching experience, strong leadership and communication skills, the ability to connect with children from grades K-12, and an infectious enthusiasm for the sport of swimming. The candidate will work closely with Board members and junior coaching staff to carry out the many day-to-day responsibilities of the coaching staff.

Daily Expectations - Head Coach
- Create daily workouts to accommodate a variety of skill levels
- Provide guidance, coordination, and management for Assistant, Junior, and Volunteer coaches to ensure proper coverage of all lanes
- Ensure a safe swimming environment with a primary focus on the swimmers in the pool at all times
- Develop and communicate swim meet line-ups promptly, ensuring all swimmers are appropriately assigned to events based on skill level, availability, and team strategy
- Coordinate with the Vice President and Team Administrator for meet line-ups, parent communications, and activity scheduling throughout the season
- Ensure prompt arrival and timeliness for all practices, meets, and team activities
- “Remain present” and engaged during practice and meet and reduce external distractions
- For more developed swimmers, provide tips for technique and refining their strokes. For less developed swimmers, provide in-water instruction to ensure repetition of tips, review any disqualification information, and ensure that it is a focus of practice
- Provide feedback on performance during meets as well as practice
- Ensure all coaches are aware of how to handle potential injury or escalate issues
- Minimize parent interaction during practices and swim meets
- Encourage, cheer, and energize swimmers with hopes of impacting positive performance
- Maintain a positive attitude and ensure a high level of encouragement
- Assist with meet/practice set-up or break-down
- Develop and communicate swim meet lineups in a timely manner, ensuring all swimmers are appropriately assigned to events based on skill level, availability, and team strategy.
- Adhere to guidelines for USA Swimming Safe Sport and ensure appropriate coach/athlete and athlete/athlete relationships.
- If needed, provide coaching/mentoring sessions for volunteer/junior coaches and, when required, counsel or provide guidance “at the moment” to ensure proper behavioral change
Required Qualifications:
- Experience as a head coach or extensive experience as an Assistant Coach
- US Swim Coach Certification or equivalent
- Valid CPR/AED, First-Aid & Pool Operator certification
- College Degree (preferred)
- Strong organizational skills
- Effective communication skills (for children and parents)
- Letters of Recommendation (3)
- Hy-Tek & Team Unify experience desired
Schedule:
Availability for daily practices, weekly swim meets, and other team events is required. Afternoon practices begin the Tuesday after Memorial Day from 5-8 p.m. Once Loudoun County Public Schools completes the school year, practices will be held mornings from 7:30-11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. Swim Meets are held on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings throughout Northern Virginia until the end of July, with our All-Star meet concluding our season the last weekend in July.
