What are the responsibilities and job description for the Chocolate Production and Retail position at Asheville Chocolate?
This position is a mix of both customer service and production. Customer service includes taking orders, making drinks, scooping gelato, and helping customers pick out chocolates. Production includes most aspects of making, checking, and packaging chocolates.
Schedule
This could be either a part-time or full-time position. We try to work with folks to set a schedule that works with their outside lives, and then stick to that same schedule every week. Ideally we'd like to find a person who can work the closing shift (2ish until 10ish) Saturday through Wednesday, but we could also work with part time. We close at 9PM Sun-Thurs, 10PM Fri and Sat, and folks are usually out the door 15-45 min after close.
Downtown tends to be busy on holiday weekends, so if you regularly travel to see family over the holidays this job is not a good fit. We are closed all day on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and sometimes New Years, and close early on Halloween. It's usually possible to take 1-3 weeks off in January or February if you want travel time.
Once your schedule is set, if you have been sticking to it on your end we will stick to it on ours. We don't cut hours during the slow season for folks who showed up throughout the busy season unless you specifically request the time off.
Skills
Barista experience and ServSafe certification are both nice to have but not required.
Liking coffee and chocolate and gelato is helpful, but not actually mandatory.
Some professional experience working with people. This could be customer service of course, but teaching, nursing, camp counselor etc. could also apply.
Enough food experience to work safely, cleanly, and efficiently in a commercial kitchen.
Must be able to work alone for at least couple hours at a time, and give direction if needed to a retail position employee.
Pay
Starting hourly rate is $15 plus tips, possibly higher with relevant experience. We will make up the difference if any payroll period averages less than $5 per hour in tips, so your guaranteed minimum pay to start would be $20 an hour.
The annual hourly tip average here is $7.30/hr and we're already through the slowest part of the year, so you should be able to expect at minimum $7 through the end of this year.
There is also a $1/hr raise once you're able to run the shop on your own for a few hours. This usually takes 1-3 months, so with tips you should be at minimum making $23 an hour by summer.
Other
Parking: Most folks park near the skate park or in one of the Rankin Ave parking decks.
Start date: Any time within the next 1-3 weeks
PTO: Starts accumulating after 6 months at a rate of 40hrs/full time year the first year, and 80 hrs/full time year after that.
Free chocolate: Of course! Somebody has to eat the stuff that's not pretty enough to sell. There is also a 25% employee discount, and a shift drink every 6 hours.
15 min break for shifts under 6 hrs, 30 min break for shifts over 6 hrs, 1hr break for full day (open to close) shifts. Break time is paid.
