Position Overview: The Deputy Director is a dynamic and collaborative leader responsible for supporting the Executive Director in the operations and management of the Asheville Downtown Improvement District (ADID). This role is integral to the success of the district’s initiatives, focusing on improving and maintaining the vibrancy, cleanliness, and safety of Downtown Asheville. The Deputy Director will work closely with various stakeholders, including local businesses, residents, and government partners, to ensure the effective delivery of services within the district.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leadership & Strategy: Assist in the development and implementation of the strategic vision for the Downtown Improvement District. Provide leadership and guidance to staff and partners to meet program goals and objectives.
- Operations Management: Oversee the day-to-day operations of the DID, ensuring high-quality services are consistently delivered. This includes managing clean and green initiatives, safety programs, and public space activations.
- Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement: Foster positive relationships with Downtown businesses, residents, city officials, and other community organizations. Collaborate with city departments and external partners to advance district goals.
- Budget & Financial Oversight: Support the management of the district's budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources. Assist with financial reporting, grant administration, and fundraising efforts to sustain and grow the district's programs.
- Program Development: Lead or contribute to the development and execution of community events, marketing campaigns, and public space activations that enhance the Downtown experience.
- Staff Supervision & Development: Manage and mentor team members, providing guidance on operations, project management, and customer service. Ensure that all staff are trained, motivated, and supported to meet performance expectations.
- Data & Reporting: Utilize data tools (such as Placer AI) to assess the impact of district programs. Provide regular updates and performance reports to the Executive Director, Board, and other stakeholders.
- Policy & Advocacy: Advocate for policies that support the growth and vibrancy of Downtown Asheville. Stay informed on industry trends and best practices for business improvement districts and urban development.
Qualifications:
- Proven experience in urban development, public administration, or a related field.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Experience with budget management, strategic planning, and operations oversight.
- Familiarity with business improvement districts or similar public-private partnerships is preferred.
- Ability to build relationships with diverse groups, including local businesses, residents, and government entities.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to manage complex projects.
- Knowledge of Asheville’s Downtown and its needs is a plus.
- Bachelor's degree in urban planning, public administration, business management, or a related field
Compensation and Benefits:
- Salary: $70,000 – $80,000 annually, depending on experience

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
- This is primarily an office-based position, with most work done sitting at a computer.
- Typical Work Hours: Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, but the candidate may be required to work weekends and be on call as needed.
- The role requires regular visits to the Downtown district for quality inspections, and you may be required to lift up to 25 lbs occasionally.
- Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and move throughout Downtown to attend on-site meetings and events.
