What are the responsibilities and job description for the Thrift Store Intake Lead position at Asheville Humane Society?
Asheville Humane Society is seeking a Thrift Store Intake Lead to oversee our donation intake process and help bring quality items to our sales floor. In this role, you'll ensure donations meet our store's standards, efficiently sort, price, and organize items, and maintain a clean and organized intake and storage area. You'll also collaborate with management to tackle challenges and create a positive, welcoming donor experience.
As a keyholder, you'll lead daily operations when our Senior or Assistant Managers are unavailable—opening and closing the store, supervising volunteers, and supporting sales activities. Plus, you'll assist with furniture donation pickups, handle customer inquiries, and keep the donation intake area running smoothly.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee and complete donation sorting, tagging, pricing, and organization processes, ensuring all accepted donations meet store standards. Items that do not meet standards should be refused respectfully, properly disposed of, or prepared for transportation.
- Ensure items are priced and moved to the sales floor promptly, place new furniture donations on the sales floor, and assist with floor redesigns as needed.
- Maintain organization in the intake area and implement improvements to donation flow, storage solutions, and other processes as necessary.
- Maintain the general upkeep and organization of the intake and storage areas, reporting any problems, accidents, unsafe conditions, or equipment issues to the Thrift Store Manager and collaborating to resolve them.
- Ensure donors feel appreciated and respected, even when their items cannot be accepted.
- Manage daily sales operations of the Thrift Store in the absence of the Thrift Store Manager or Assistant Manager. This includes performing all opening procedures, such as counting the cash register and safe, preparing the store, and ensuring staff are ready for the day.
- Ensure the store remains clean, organized, and fully stocked with merchandise. Price donations and move them to the sales floor promptly, and perform all closing procedures, such as pulling reports, counting the register and safe, and preparing deposits.
- Perform furniture donation pickups by driving AHS vehicles and loading and unloading furniture donations.
- Assist with supervising volunteers in alignment with AHS policies when the Assistant Manager is unavailable. This includes assigning and directing tasks, providing ongoing feedback and appreciation, and addressing complaints or resolving problems.
- Support sales operations as needed by operating the cash register, handling cash, overseeing cash-handling volunteers, assisting on the sales floor, addressing customer inquiries, and opening or closing the shop and register as required.
- Process trash and recycling from the intake area daily.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous experience in retail, thrift store operations, or donation intake is highly preferred.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Ability to lift and move heavy items, including furniture, as part of donation pickups and organizing the workspace.
- Comfortable standing, walking, bending, and performing physical tasks for extended periods.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills to manage sorting, pricing, and organizing donations efficiently.
- Basic customer service and communication skills to assist donors and handle inquiries professionally.
