Job Description
The position of Lecturer of Music and Director of Bands is a full-time, 9-month position that reports to the Chair of the Department of Music within the College of Arts and Sciences. Lecturer is a promotable, faculty rank that is evaluated primarily on excellence in teaching. Service to the Department, College, and University is also expected and will primarily take the form of participation in recruitment events, including identifying and awarding recruitment scholarships. The teaching load will be the equivalent of twenty-four (24) credits during the academic year with Band Camp responsibilities in the summer. The schedule is comprised mostly of afternoon rehearsals, evening concerts, and athletic events on the weekends.
- Serve as instructor for Marching Band in the fall (Music 010A), Symphonic Band in the fall and spring (Music 010B&C), Pep Band in the spring (Music 050), and possibly Brass Ensemble both semesters (Music 011). Duties include rehearsals and performances, music selection, drill writing, and tasks typically expected of instructors such as grading, office hours and syllabus preparation.
- Teach and advise in Music Education program and supervise field experiences.
- Possibly direct the Brass Ensemble and Community Band.
- Supervise supplemental staff (twirling advisor, etc.) and work with student leadership.
- Perform general administrative tasks for the band program, such as maintaining instrument, music, and uniform inventories, as well as coordinating instrument repair.
- Prepare budgets and maintain fiscal responsibility for invoices with an administrative assistant.
- Perform service to the department typical of full-time faculty, including: department meetings, recital previews, juries, recital attendance, auditions, committee work, summer drive-ins, orientation and admissions events.
- Plan and execute off-campus performances of the Band program, typically area high schools and Band trips to major cities.
- Rehearse and conduct the Ashland County Honors Band(s).
- Plan and coordinate Marching Band Camp in the summer (supplemental pay).
Required Qualifications
- Master of Music or Master of Music Education or higher is required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in directing marching and/or symphonic bands.
