Under the direct supervision of the Food & Beverage Manager, the primary functions of the Assistant Restaurant Manager are to create and manage scheduling, train and supervise non-cook personnel, and manage the front of house (server and other non-cook personnel) operations on evenings and weekends.  This position also takes the lead in setting expectations for and ensuring exceptional customer service in the restaurant, collaborative and effective communication between non-cook personnel and cooking staff and identifying opportunities for improving the efficiency of front-end service to in-house and to go customers of the restaurant.  The Assistant Restaurant Manager also assists the Food & Beverage Manager with addressing personnel matters, hiring/onboarding and performance management of entire restaurant staff and takes lead in collaborating with Hotel Management to ensure cohesiveness between two teams.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (and other duties as assigned)

  1. Works closely with recruiting and HR to successfully recruit, hire and onboard new hires.
  2. Leads training efforts and regular safety meetings to ensure compliance with best practices and government regulations for health and safety in a restaurant environment and exceptional customer service by non-cook personnel.
  3. Assists with cross-training and professional development of high performing staff and performance management of those not meeting expectations.  Ensures mid-year and end of year performance evaluations are timely and substantively completed.  
  4. Leads by example and hold team accountable related to compliance with dress code, delivery of exceptional service, respectful and effective conflict resolution, attendance and punctuality, and other proper operational procedures and compliance with all company policies.
  5. Assists Food & Beverage Manager to manage banquets and other events, including scheduling, budgeting, staffing and menu planning as well as communication with the customer and entire staff at hotel to ensure a successful team approach to event.
  6. Effectively and respectfully resolves customer complaints regarding services rendered or food quality.
  7. Solicits and applies customer and staff feedback to implement process and service improvements.
  8. Performs administrative tasks necessary to create and manage staff schedule, ensure adequate staffing and coverage, training compliance, health code compliance and a safe work environment, menu updates and any inventory or ordering assistance needed by Food & Beverage Manager.
  9. Meets with the Food & Beverage Manager daily and non-cook personnel frequently to stay informed of changes affecting operations.
  10. Completes end of day reconciliation (including proper and timely tip distribution) and management of timely timecard entry and submissions to payroll.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  1. Strong knowledge, understanding and sensitivity to the Inupiat culture.
  2. High school or equivalent certification.
  3. 3-5 years’ experience in a restaurant setting with some management or supervisory experience.
  4. Alaska food worker card or the ability to obtain one immediately upon hire.
  5. Must have a demonstrated ability to successfully and respectfully deal with the general public in a restaurant or retail environment as well as effectively train and manage others in a constructive and supportive way.
  6. Must be able to work independently under stressful situations and must be willing to work shifts that vary.
  7. The ability to speak and understand the Inupiaq language is preferred.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of employees or customers. 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS/REASONING ABILITY

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.   Specific vision abilities required by this job includes the ability to use close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment is in a busy hotel and restaurant setting.  This position may be required to work in alone at various times during the day or night, or at least be the only manager on duty. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, occasionally be exposed to wet or humid conditions, may frequently be exposed to extreme cold, and occasionally exposed to extreme heat and may be required to travel by motor vehicle or in small and large commercial aircraft for long periods of time for overnight or multi-day trips.
