The Vice President for Institutional Advancement is the chief advancement officer for North Central College and serves as the principal architect of the College’s development plan and fundraising initiatives by providing strategic direction for and oversight of the functional areas of private support for the College.

The Vice President reports to the College President and works with internal and external constituencies in the planning, implementation, and administration of a comprehensive program for fundraising, partnership development, and marketing compatible with the mission and strategic plan of the College.

The Vice President has responsibility for the following administrative units and functions :

  • Philanthropy
  • Alumni and Family Engagement
  • Annual Fund
  • Advancement Services

The Vice President serves in the lead role in coordinating, developing, and implementing annual and long-term strategic plans for increasing private support, is responsible for the planning, implementation, and success of capital campaigns and projects; and effectively communicates the mission and values of the College to all constituents. The Vice President works collaboratively with the Provost, College / School Deans, and the Office of Corporate, Foundation, and Sponsored Research Support to develop annual programmatic and academic goals in line with the President’s focus on enhancing the student experience and meeting needs of the College; fosters a culture of philanthropy throughout the College; and provides an annual review of major fundraising efforts and alumni engagement. The Vice President works in a culture of transparency, compliance, collaboration, and integrity.

College Leadership

  • Possesses outstanding leadership qualities to achieve the advancement goals of the College.
  • Assists in the identification, recruitment, involvement, and engagement of Board of Trustee members and assists in staffing the Advancement Committee of the Board.
  • Facilitates the College’s achievement of its goals and objectives by planning and implementing long- and short-term strategies to secure gifts from private donors through major, planned, and annual gifts.
  • Develops and oversees comprehensive, capital, and special campaigns.
  • Advises the President, senior College administrative officers, and members of the Board of Trustees on issues relating to College development and advancement by making presentations at meetings of the Board of Trustees and preparing reports, recommendations, findings, and other correspondence as required.
  • Holds a deep appreciation of the history and traditions of North Central College in advancing the College and strongly supports its role and mission.
  • Management

  • Maintains a dynamic portfolio of high-level, high-net-worth prospects and donors, and solicits major and planned gifts, as well as strengthening endowment support.
  • Develops a unifying vision for advancement and makes actionable decisions based on the input from the President, Board of Trustees, staff, and other key stakeholders. Ensures support of the institutional mission of the College by reviewing and approving unit plans, goals, and objectives; designing systems of effective controls to guide work toward expected outcomes; and evaluating progress toward accomplishment.
  • Mentors, trains, supervises, and evaluates Office of Institutional Advancement staff through direction and leadership. Sets measurable and attainable goals, and evaluates outcomes to ensure fundraising staff have the information and resources they need to succeed.
  • Supervises and manages personnel and advancement operations through a CRM database system.
  • Contributes to the overall success of the College by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the President.
  • Operational

  • Enables employees in the office to perform assigned tasks by assuming budgetary responsibility for all of College Advancement, coordinating the development of the annual budget, and retaining executive authority over all departmental budgets within the Office of Institutional Advancement.
  • Prepares or oversees the preparation of all content and materials needed for approved fundraising and public relations programs including proposals to donors and donor prospects, gift recognition / acknowledgment materials, appeal letters, etc.
  • Monitors and addresses federal, state, and local legislation which may impact the College, its students, and its operations.
  • Professional Growth and Development

  • Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and / or conferences as directed.
  • Has knowledge and experience in delivering high-performing central services units such as Advancement Services, Finance, and Operations areas.
  • Ensures that miscellaneous assignments related to College Advancement are completed in the best interest of the College by accepting and accomplishing tasks which are delegated by the President.

Possesses the knowledge, ability, and personal attributes necessary to convey to alumni, parents, friends, foundations, and other contributors the need, propriety, and benefit of private giving to the College.

  • Knowledge in current fundraising methodology and regulations.
  • Demonstrated understanding of financial reporting, including target setting, revenue recognition, expenses, budgets, forecasting, income statement, and gap closure.
  • Understanding of complex real estate and related financial matters; estate planning.
  • Brings energy, creativity, and a positive spirit and proven experience in providing leadership, strategic vision, and goal achievement to advancement in a team-oriented environment.
  • Possesses savviness regarding the use of social media and the differences in generational approaches to philanthropy in achieving alumni engagement and advancement goals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the promotion of diversity and inclusion.
  • Ability and willingness to delegate effectively and to hold direct reports accountable.
  • Skilled decision-maker, with transparency in decision-making and management.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with employees and across campus.
  • Ability to travel frequently, including overnight, in order to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors to the College.
  • Computer literacy as it relates to fundraising and alumni engagement.

    This position requires a strategic thinker, a skilled communicator, and a thoughtful and detail-oriented leader with adept problem-solving and project management skills. This position also requires an individual with a collaborative mindset; broad communications experience; an ability to process and make decisions from multiple inputs; excellent writing and editing skills; strong technology, presentation, and public speaking aptitude; and the ability to cultivate relationships with a variety of constituents, stakeholders, and government officials toward advancing the College. This individual must work well with the President and Cabinet and represent the College internally and externally with dignity, poise, and professionalism.

    Education / Training

    A bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree is preferred.

    Experience

    A minimum of 10 years of experience in College / University-based philanthropy is required in progressively responsible positions in higher education advancement, including annual, major gift, and planned giving; donor pipeline development; and a foundation in corporate / foundation and / or government relations is preferred. The successful candidate will hold a record of leadership and accomplishment in advancement with a proven track record of fundraising success, including campaign planning and execution. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in the solicitation and achievement of numerous major and principal gifts and present a history of building an advancement program.
