ATA Services is seeking to hire Child Fatality Researcher (CFR) and Abstractor to work on a temporary assignment with the State of New Mexico Department of Health. This position is expected to last until June 30, 2025.
- Hourly Pay Rate: $30.00 per hour with weekly pay

- Schedule: Full time; 40 hours per week

- Work Location: Remote (May need some coordination with office in Santa Fe). Candidate MUST live in New Mexico.
Brief description of Child Fatality Review:
The NM-CFR was established to review child deaths to develop recommendations for prevention. The CFR reviews all New Mexico resident deaths except those resulting from natural disease in children from birth though the age of 17 years, depending on the cause. The CFR also reports to the National Fatality Review Case Reporting System (NFR-CRS) in conjunction with the web-based database developed by the National Center for Fatality Review and Prevention. This position supports the work of the Child Fatality Review and will work in partnership with the CFR Coordinator.
Experience and Expertise Needed
The work of the Child Fatality Researcher and Abstractor is to research and track case files regarding unnatural death of children in New Mexico (ages 0 to 17 years of age).
The person in this position will collaborate with various agencies and subject matter experts to collect fatality and circumstantial information from the Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics, health systems, school districts, law enforcement agencies, child welfare system, judicial system, emergency medical system, and other entities to build comprehensive case files on each child’s death. Once the researcher completes a file, they will be responsible for compiling the data into an abstract. Closed cases will be loaded into a National Fatality Review-Case Reporting System. The intended outcome of this work is a case review by a panel who will make recommendations to prevent future child deaths in New Mexico. This work is mandated as part of the NM Child Death and Review Legislation rule 7-NMAC4.5.
Working with Systems
For this work, the contractor would access several sources, tracking sheets etc., and then research each case and create a case file.
Basic process is getting death case information from Office of Medical Investigator, fill out Smartsheet, then do requests and create files for data including, but not limited to:
- Vital Records - Birth and Death Certificates
- Health Information Exchange (HIE) (Synchronys)
- Health System Records (Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Presbyterian, etc.)
- Child Welfare System
- School Records
- Judicial Records
- Police Departments
- EMS
- Etc.
Needs for the Position
- Computer or laptop with ability to keep confidential and secure records.
- HIPAA certification and confidentiality agreement signed, and internal access to:
- Smartsheet Access (NMDOH)
- SharePoint Files Access (NMDOH)
- Office of Injury and Violence Prevention Shared Drive with Confidential CFR files (NMDOH)
- Confidential Fax Machine (NMDOH)
