Lead Controls Hardware Design Engineer

ATC is looking to hire a driven Lead Controls Hardware Design Engineer to create and support engineered to order automation equipment. ATC Automation designs and builds custom automated assembly and test equipment for various industries including transportation, life science, and consumer goods.

A Lead Controls Hardware Design Engineer is a working leader. This individual will create and lead others in creating detailed electrical and pneumatic schematics based on the requirements of the automation, appropriate standards, and customer specifications. This is a full-time position with a full benefit package, that is direct hire with the opportunity of professional growth and additional growth opportunities across our corporate organization. This position will have no direct reports, it is viewed as a working leader position to ensure the holistic success of the group. This position is located at our HQ in Cookeville, TN reporting to the Director of Life Science Division. Interaction with the Business Unit Managers will also be required for project execution.

How You Will Make a Difference:

• Creation of complete electrical design package, which includes detailed electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics, cable routing diagrams, panel layouts, bills of materials and material requisitions.
• Guiding others to create consistent drawings across all contributors.
• Perform calculations such as full-load amperage, short-circuit current ratings, and panel temperature assessments.
• Forecast and track project timelines, manpower allocations.
• Schedule and lead recurring meetings with team leaders
• Coordinate multiple projects at various stages of completeness
• Implement automation of the design task to improve efficiency. Macros, scripting, etc.
• Drive standardization of schematics across the division.
• Work closely with Design & Build teams to confirm alignment in approach.
• Work closely with our vendors to secure documentation and technical support.
• Create and read pneumatic and electrical prints with working knowledge of AutoCAD Electrical. (schematics)
• Have excellent computer skills and a high level of proficiency in machine controls.
• Communicate effectively, both written and verbal, with internal and external customers. (Cross-discipline communication)
• Knowledge and application of electrical and controls engineering theories and principles
• Support applications engineering (quoting dept.), as needed, for scope definition prior to quoting
• Minimal travel is required

Ideal Technical Experience:

• Experience with the applicable electrical standards: NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 79, UL 508A, IEC 60204-1 (European equivalent to NFPA 79), EU Machinery Directive (CE).
• Experience with the applicable safety standards for Safety Related Parts of a Control System. ISO 13849 or equivalent.
• Experience with a mainstream electrical design software. AutoCAD Electrical, ePLAN, SolidWorks Electrical, etc.
• Experience specifying and sizing pneumatic systems. Control valves, filters, regulators, surge tanks.
• Familiarity with PLC, HMI, Robot programming. Enough to guide their design decisions.
• Experience with sizing industrial power systems. 600V or less AC, transformers, disconnects, overcurrent protection, system and component sizing.
• Hands on experience with industrial automation.
• Experience with industrial control power systems. 24VDC, Class 2 circuits, electronic circuit protection.
• Familiarity with mainstream supplier product offerings, Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Keyence, IFM, SMC, FESTO.
• Experience integrating third-party equipment into electrical designs. Examples: vision systems, motion control products (servos), and robotics.

You Have:

• Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering
• Leadership experience within a technical team
• 7 years of relevant work experience

Physical Demands:

• Stand, walk, push, pull, reach overhead, and bend to floor.
• Exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally.
• Exert 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently.
• Exert up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• VISUAL ACUITY: Near acuity with or without accommodation.
• HEARING Ability: Ability to monitor machine sounds to identify and diagnose.
