We seek a weekend Library Assistant for the Athens-Clarke County Library. The Library will hire an experienced, responsible, creative, and enthusiastic individual who embraces and thrives in an active, fast-paced, and culturally diverse environment. A successful candidate will deliver quality library services in the circulation department.
This position works as part of the Circulation Team to provide front-line materials circulation services to patrons in the library and performs other routine, supportive duties. This position requires dependability, commitment to excellence, and a customer service attitude that exhibits the inclusive, respectful, and welcoming core values of the library. The ability to start, finish or pick up work projects at various points, without direct supervision, is vital. This position reports to the Regional Circulation Coordinator.
Minimum Training and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent required, with college degree or college experience preferred. At least one year experience working with the public is required, with public library experience preferred. Or, any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following duties are normal, but not exclusive or all-inclusive, expectations for this job. Other duties of a similar nature may be required and assigned, and job assignments and schedule may change in the future.
- Provides direct customer service to library patrons, assisting with their materials circulation, information, and readers’ advisory needs.
- Provides support in many areas of daily library operations, including (but not limited to); basic facility maintenance; organizing and re-shelving materials; accepting fees and fines; routing holds, loans and information; materials processing; recording statistics; performing basic office duties.
- Assists with collection maintenance through performing tasks such as emptying bookdrops, sorting, shelving, and checking materials in and out of the library.
- Assists with patron use of meeting rooms according to policy and established procedures.
- Upholds all library policies, including the Patron Responsibilities and Conduct statement; monitors and responds to safety and security of library patrons and campus; reports situations according to outlined procedures.
- Correctly completes monetary transactions with patrons regarding fines, fees, and purchases.
- Meets System expectation to participate in at least two approved off-site outreach programs each year.
- Meets System expectation to complete at least 10 hours of approved work-related training activities during each year of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Personal computer proficiency and the ability to use, understand, and assist patrons with computer applications.
- Knowledge of basic library operational principles, practices, and application of ARLS, A-CC Library, and PINES policies, procedures, and activities.
- Knowledge of all normal and emergency library building procedures.
- Knowledge of basic office principles and skill in performing office support, including ability to collect cash money and make correct change.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with staff and patrons of all ages, as well as answer questions and explain procedures and policies.
- Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment, handle a busy public service desk, and remain calm under demanding, stressful conditions.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and make independent and critical decisions using established practices and procedures.
- Ability to maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance.
- Ability to walk, climb, stoop, reach, bend, kneel, and crawl in order to handle and manage storage and retrieval of library materials and equipment. Physical ability to regularly operate a variety of 21st century library machinery and equipment such as book carts; must be able move or carry objects or materials and to lift and place materials above head; must be able to exert up to 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 to 25 pounds force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of Medium Work.
