JOB SUMMARY
The Quality Lab and Compliance Technician ensures product quality, regulatory compliance, and alignment with industry standards through comprehensive laboratory testing and adherence to UL, CAS, and other certification processes. This role supports the company’s commitment to quality and safety by contributing to continuous improvement initiatives and cross-functional collaboration.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Laboratory Testing and Analysis
- Performs routine and specialized testing of raw materials, in-process products, and finished goods to ensure quality standards are met.
- Develops and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) for lab testing processes.
- Manages the lab's testing schedule and prioritize tasks based on production needs.
- Troubleshoots quality issues and provides recommendations for corrective actions.
- Maintains and calibrates laboratory equipment to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Regulatory Compliance
- Monitors and implements compliance with all relevant regulations, including UL, CAS, ISO, and other applicable industry standards.
- Monitors and implements compliance with all relevant regulatory regulations, including REACH, RoHS, Prop 65, TSCA and other applicable industry standards.
- Prepares compliance reports and documentation for internal and external stakeholders.
- Assists in audits and regulatory inspections by providing required documentation and addressing any findings.
- Serves as a subject matter expert on regulatory requirements, providing guidance and updates to internal teams.
UL and CAS Compliance
- Ensures all products are designed, tested, and certified in accordance with UL and CAS requirements.
- Coordinates with external certification bodies to maintain active certifications and address compliance gaps.
- Proactively tracks and integrates updates to UL and CAS standards into company processes and product designs.
Documentation and Reporting
- Maintain organized records of lab results, compliance documentation, and certification files.
- Create detailed test reports and compliance summaries for internal and external use.
- Document and track non-conformance issues, root cause analyses, and corrective actions.
Collaboration and Support
- Work closely with Production, Engineering, and R&D teams to ensure compliance and quality requirements are integrated into product designs and processes.
- Participate in cross-functional teams to address customer complaints, product issues, or process improvements.
- Provide training and technical support to team members on quality standards and compliance processes.
Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement
- Support quality initiatives such as statistical process control (SPC), failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), and other quality tools.
- Participate in root cause analyses and corrective/preventive action (CAPA) planning.
- Identify and implement improvements to laboratory testing and compliance workflows.
- Lead or support projects aimed at reducing waste, improving product quality, and enhancing efficiency.
Additional Responsibilities as Needed
- Act as a liaison between the company and external vendors or suppliers for quality and compliance-related inquiries.
- Support the development of quality control plans and inspection protocols.
- Manage inventory of lab supplies and ensure availability of required materials for testing.
- Assist with customer inquiries or certifications related to product quality and compliance.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Quality Manager to support the organization’s quality and compliance goals.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education / Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in quality lab testing, regulatory compliance, or related roles.
Skills / Specialized Knowledge / Abilities
- In-depth knowledge of UL and CAS compliance processes and standards.
- Strong proficiency in lab testing procedures, quality management systems, and relevant software tools.
- Familiarity with quality methodologies like Six Sigma, Lean, and statistical analysis tools is a plus.
- Exceptional organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
Certifications (Preferred)
- Quality certifications (e.g., CQIA, CQE, or ISO Lead Auditor).
- Training in compliance or regulatory frameworks (e.g., UL Standards).
Work Environment
- Combination of laboratory, office, and manufacturing settings.
- Use of PPE is required in lab and production areas.
Tools and Equipment
- Personal computer & printer, scale, lighters, rulers, cameras.
Travel
- None to minimal – based on customer testing needs
Physical and Mental Demands
- Required to walk/be mobile entire shift.
- Required to stand/sit at a desk/workstation for long periods of time.
- Ability to work at a computer terminal.
- Ability to compare, problem solve, analyze, instruct, interpret, etc.
