JOB PURPOSE
 

Division: Secondary School 

FLSA: Non-exempt

Position Status: 10 month employee

Hours per week: part time (0.5)

Schedule: Hours flexible (between 7:30 and 4:30)

Reports to: Science Group Leader & Lab Technician

Start Date: July 28, 2025

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES 

• General Laboratory Maintenance 
  • Work with the Lab Technician to monitor and track lab inventory twice per annum. 
  • Maintain and update SDS (Safety Data Sheets) and or CLEAPPS (Hazard cards) for chemical inventory.
  • Maintains chemical storage standards and a set of reagents for specific lab activities. 
  • Cleaning and maintaining lab equipment, including recalibration and repairs of lab equipment.
  • Operates electrical and nonelectrical laboratory equipment and potentially dangerous substances (flammable liquids, infectious bacteria, biohazards. etc.)
  • Cleans up hazardous spills, such as mercury and acids and bases and administers first aid related to chemical accidents as required.
  • Prepares molar solutions of acids by diluting concentrated solutions; Calculates relative volumes of concentrated acid and water. 
  • Calculates required mass and prepares standard solutions of salt and bases.
  • Prepares buffer solutions of a given pH and calibrates the pH meter and prepares chemical indicator and biological stain solutions using appropriate quantities of reagents. 
  • Performs titrations to verify the concentration of standardized solutions.
  • Properly sterilizes equipment and cleans glassware using the appropriate solvents.
  • Following OSHA protocols for disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Returning equipment in a serviceable and clean condition to its allocated storage.
• Classroom Lab Preparation
  • Preparing the equipment and chemicals needed for chemistry classes as long as sufficient notice was provided in writing through lab logger.
  • Provide the SDS (Safety Data Sheets) and or CLEAPPS (Hazard cards) for the chemicals requested as part of the lab prep work.
  • Inform teachers, Lab Technician, and Science Group Leader when chemicals or equipment for a lab is unavailable.

• Teaching Assistant
  • Assist in laboratory classes helping with equipment use and safety.  Available to co-teach as needed and assists during lab work, primarily with grade 7 and grade 8 labs. 
  • Assist with DP science internal investigations to help students determine lab equipment needs, and provide solutions when chemicals or equipment are unavailable, and be available to troubleshoot experiments as needed.
• Administrative duties 
  • Informing the Science Group Leader of any short notice requests.
  • Working with the Lab Technician to submit required budget paperwork to the business office in a timely manner.
  • Undergo professional development training sessions as required.

REQUIREMENTS 

• A relevant Bachelor’s degree, equivalent, or in pursuit of a relevant Bachelor’s with two years completed 
• The successful candidate should have a passion for education and extensive experience as a science lab technician
