Description

The Atlantic Council seeks a talented, dynamic, and entrepreneurial individual for a position as Assistant Director, Communications in its Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center (AALAC). The Assistant Director will form a key part of the team and will work closely with the Senior leadership of the team in an entrepreneurial atmosphere. This position requires cross-collaboration with colleagues in other regional and thematic centers across the Atlantic Council, in particular the position will involve close coordination with the broader Atlantic Council communications and digital team.


Based in Washington DC, the ideal candidate is a passionate and entrepreneurial self-starter who will lead AALAC’s communications and digital strategy and will advise and support Center portfolios in their comms efforts. As well, the Assistant Director will help conceptualize and implement the communications strategy and advance community outreach and engagement. This position will focus on ensuring that AALAC’s reach includes critical Latin American and Caribbean policy stakeholders alongside consistently broadening our reach to a new community of global actors to highlight the increasing relevance of the region in a world context. The ideal candidate will further AALAC’s brand, build relationships with journalists, position AALAC experts and our analysis in the media, and increase visibility for the Center’s work overall. The ability to operationalize ideas and balance multiple tasks in a dynamic environment under time pressure is key to success in the job.


This position is based in our Washington, DC, headquarters, requiring a minimum of 4 days per week in office. The Atlantic Council offers a competitive compensation package commensurate with experience, education, and organizational equity, with offers from $60,000 to $70,000.

 

Job responsibilities

  • Strategic Communications: Work with the Center’s leadership and portfolio leads to advance a cohesive, center-wide communications strategy. Implement the strategy and adjust it using benchmarks, metrics, and other measurements to meet goals.
  • Media Relations: Build and maintain relationships with key journalists, media outlets, and influencers in the region. Work with the Atlantic Council’s comms team to pitch experts, create tip sheets, draft press releases, track AALAC’s presence in media, steward relationships with journalists/ track journalist movement/ convene and help lead monthly brown bag sessions with journalists.
  • Editorial: Help to manage the Center’s publications process, guiding issue briefs, spotlights, and long-form reports through the editing process. On a day-to-day basis, edit select communications.
  • Marketing: Coordinate event invitation process and email newsletters, including acting as lead writer and editor for a monthly newsletter of the Center’s accomplishments. Lead subscription campaigns, manage email lists, and select outreach.  Provide continuity and consistent innovation to how and who AALAC reaches out to for its programming and publications.
  • Social Media: Lead Center’s social media strategy and messaging to build a cohesive narrative around programming.
  • Website: Guide AALAC updates to the Atlantic Council’s website to ensure regular entries and that inputs conform to AC style, including staff and nonresident fellow bios and media mentions, center and initiative pages, and publication and event pages.
  • Relationship Management: Help to manage the work of communications consultants, coordinate communication activities with partners, and be an active liaison with the Atlantic Council Engagement Team and with other Centers. 
  • Data/Metrics: Work with Atlantic Council Media Relations and Digital teams to track data and metrics across all communications channels, and develop best practices based on data analytics.

Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in media relations and/or communications, preferably with a focus on Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • Excellent English-language writing and editing skills, with the ability to create compelling and engaging content, and a desire to experiment in outreach methods. Strong Spanish-language written and verbal skills.
  • Knowledge of Latin American and Caribbean media landscape and familiarity with key journalists and media outlets in the region.
  • Proven track record in managing multiple projects and stakeholders simultaneously and demonstrated experience in advancing communications goals.
  • Working knowledge of social media management platforms, such as Sprout Social; website management tools, such as WordPress; and email marketing tools, such as Marketo.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work collegially with others and with the highest standards of integrity.
  • Self-starter who can balance multiple tasks in a dynamic environment and who thrives in a mission-oriented organization. A dedicated team player is essential.
