My client is a financial services and investment platform specializing in residential real estate. It connects institutional capital with property investors through a nationwide network of third-party originators, brokers, and internal sales teams. Focused on business-purpose lending, the firm provides financing solutions for investors engaged in property acquisition, renovation, resale, and rental. Its offerings include bridge loans for single and multi-family properties, as well as long-term rental financing for individual properties and portfolios. The firm’s integrated approach, combining lending and ancillary services, fosters repeat business and long-term client relationships.
They are seeking a Senior Development and Construction Underwriter to join our growing and fast-paced Credit Team. The Senior Development and Construction Underwriter will manage a pipeline of development and construction loans focused on small to mid-size development projects. On a day-to-day basis, the candidate will be responsible for reviewing, analyzing, and making decisions on mortgage underwriting files to determine compliance with company underwriting guidelines for development and construction loans, including collateral and budget analysis, data validation, borrower background and credit review, entity compliance, and borrower experience.
The candidate will be expected to have a strong understanding of the firm’s loan programs, products, and guidelines, as well as a robust understanding of the loan life cycle. The candidate must possess exemplary attention to detail, be self-motivated, and be able to make decisions independently, while managing risk and ensuring the quality and compliance with company guidelines and standards.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Create, maintain, and update guidelines and procedures related to firm’s credit underwriting for development and construction loans.
- Underwrite development and construction loans in accordance with firm’s underwriting guidelines
- Guide and mentor other members of the development and construction underwriting team
- Manage loan-level risk and ensure loan quality and compliance with company guidelines, including addressing loan-level deficiencies and challenges
- Review loan files for accuracy, creditworthiness, and compliance
- Communicate with Underwriting/Credit Managers and internal partners quickly and effectively to ensure that loans move through the process efficiently to ensure the best possible customer experience
- Collaborate with firm’s Credit Committee to review feedback from investors, lead and contribute to initiatives to improve loan credit quality
- Understand and appreciate the needs of clients, investors, and capital providers and work collaboratively with the company’s various other teams and departments
REQUIREMENTS
- Hybrid or in-person candidates strongly preferred (NYC)
- At least 5 years of prior experience in development and construction underwriting or lending required
- Demonstrated familiarity with development and construction projects
- Demonstrated familiarity with all phases of development projects including but not limited to: acquisition of land, entitlement of land, horizontal development, vertical development, etc.
- BS/BA degree or higher required, preferably in a related field such as Finance, Business, Economics, Mathematics, or a similar discipline
- Knowledge of mortgage software and an understanding of state and federal loan regulations is preferred
- Advanced Microsoft Excel knowledge required
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
