Device Development Engineer

Atomic Machines
Berkeley, CA Full Time
POSTED ON 1/19/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 3/18/2025

About Atomic Machines:

Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era in micromanufacturing with its Matter Compiler (MC) technology. The MC enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by offering manufacturing processes and a materials library that is inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. The MC promises to unlock MEMS manufacturing both for the many device classes that never could be made by semiconductor methods but also to open up entirely new classes. Furthermore, the MC is fully digital in the way 3D printing is digital, but where 3D printing produces parts of a single material using a single process, the MC is a multi-process, multi-material technology: bits and raw materials go in and complete, functional micromachines come out.  The Atomic Machines team has also created an exciting first device – one that was only made possible by the existence of the Matter Compiler – that we will be unveiling to the world soon. Our offices are in Berkeley and Santa Clara, California. This position is full-time onsite and is located in our Berkeley location, reporting to the Director of Design Engineering.

About this Role:

We are seeking a Device Development Engineer to join our growing Devices Design team. This is a unique hands-on role with a focus on designing, manufacturing, and testing prototypes in our R&D lab, in our Hybrid Fab, and on our novel fully automated manufacturing platform. You will be working closely with experienced Device Designers and other engineers and scientists to come up with truly innovative solutions for microscale systems. We solve difficult multiphysics challenges to make real stuff at an incredible pace. The feature sizes of our devices range from single microns to several millimeters and our manufacturing capabilities include a wide range of materials and processes.

This is an excellent opportunity for an early career professional who is excited about utilizing processes that enable new classes of devices to be fabricated and manufactured at scale. The ideal applicant thrives in a highly collaborative workplace, actively engages in the development process and runs toward the hard gritty effort to make things truly work.

What You'll Do:
  • Build microscale prototype components and assemblies on manual, semi-automatic, and automatic manufacturing systems.
  • Generate and maintain CAD and manufacturing documentation of complex microsystems.
  • Design, build, and operate custom test setups.
  • Develop and prototype new manufacturing concepts for novel design features such as the ability for the automated platform to make its own custom tooling.
  • Perform experiments, analyze data and document results in a digestible format, and make design and process recommendations.
  • Perform sample prep and analysis on advanced metrology tools such as SEM, x-ray, optical profilometer, CMM, etc.
  • Bring up new R&D lab tools for manufacturing, testing, or analysis.
  • Manually machine (lathe, mill, etc) relatively simple parts when urgently needed to unblock yourself or others from doing further work.
  • Write Standard Operating Procedures for new lab tools, processes, and custom test setups.
  • Carefully document decisions, experimental results, measurements, etc.
  • Work collaboratively in cross-functional engineering teams with contributors from Process Engineering, Manufacturing, Software, and other disciplines.

What You'll Need:
  • Hands-on lab experience building and/or testing complex systems.
  • Intermediate CAD experience at a minimum.
  • Working knowledge of benchtop measurement and metrology equipment (multimeters, oscilloscopes, calipers, micrometers, etc).
  • At least basic knowledge in material science and engineering data analysis.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams.
  • Detail orientation, excellent adherence to the scientific method, strong work ethic and an outcomes-focused attitude.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field

Bonus Points For:
  • Experience with microscale systems (MEMS or other semiconductor industries, microfluidics, micro optics, etc.).
  • Extensive CAD knowledge including PDM and PLM toolsTrack record of fabrication experience, e.g., a maker portfolio.
  • Machine shop experience (manual or CNC mill, manual or CNC lathe, saws, grinders, etc.).
  • Programming experience, particularly in Python.
  • Experience with data visualization and analysis tools such as JMP, Matlab, Pandas, matplotlib, etc.
