The Director of Cardiovascular Services is responsible for direct management, performance, implementation, and outcome monitoring of Cardiovascular Services. Departments include Invasive and Non-Invasive Cardiology, Cardiac Rehab, Cardio-Pulmonary Rehab, and Non-Invasive Vascular Lab. Also, responsible for implementing strategic planning for on-going business development activities, developing marketing and outreach strategies, facilitating decision making process with Medical Directors, coordinating with nursing units in telemetry, emergency, home care, clinics and cardiac units for patient triage, physician needs and overall care delivery and developing, reviewing, and achieving annual cardiac and vascular service-line budgets. The Service Line Director will plan, organize, and direct the departmental operations in accordance with established policies of Augusta Health and in compliance with accreditation, and state/federal regulatory requirements.

 

Requirements

Education:

  • BS in Healthcare related field (Allied Health or Applied Science); or BS in Nursing

Licensure:

  • Current BLS certification 
  • ACLS within 6 months of employment 
  • Current and valid RN license in VA or from a RN compact state; or
  • Registered Radiologic Technologist (RT(R)) with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) with either of the following credentials:
    • Cardiovascular-Interventional RT (CV) credential, or Cardiac-Interventional Radiography (CI) credential

Experience:

  • 5 years departmental management experience

 

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • MBA or MHA

Licensure:

  • Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS), or
  • Nurse Executive, Board Certified (NE-BC)

Experience:

  • 3 years of Cardiovascular Leadership experience

  • Strong leadership, organizational management skills, financial analysis, programmatic development, physician and community relations, excellent written and oral communication, knowledge of the healthcare industry and workflows.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft applications. Proficiency on Microsoft Excel
  • A successful track record in directing staff, developing talent and leadership, and shaping a customer service culture.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking, process improvement skills, and independent judgment and business acumen in order to facilitate needed change. Ability to lead change and achieve support for change; builds consensus. A proven strategic thinker with ability to see big picture and opportunities.

Essential Job Duties:

Clinical Management

  • Supervises all departmental activities related to patient care.
  • Ensures that patient care needs are met in an appropriate fashion and in a timely manner.
  • Assesses the delivery of care and identifies problems and any need for improvements.
  • Plans ways to solve problems and to make improvements in the delivery of patient care in collaboration with the Vice President of Professional Services
  • Assures intra-departmental and inter-departmental services function effectively and efficiently. Works to effectively integrate services as appropriate.
  • Keeps the Admin Director of CV Services informed on reportable situations and operational needs.

In collaboration with the Administrative Director of CV Services, develops and implements a plan for departmental growth.

  • Formulates long and short-term goals for department within the framework of organizational goals. Plans are recommended annually and reviewed/revised as needed.
  • Sets priorities, assigns responsibilities, and establishes appropriate timetables.
  • Annually monitors and evaluates the accomplishment of departmental goals.
  • Project future needs for service, space, equipment, material, revenue, and personnel. Recommendations are made as needed for changes in these areas.
  • Promptly submits required reports to the appropriate individual, committee, or department. Reports are prepared and informational. Data is accurate.
  • Promotes and evaluates the achievement of department objectives in collaboration with the Admin Director of CV Services.
  • Works with the Admin Director of CV Services to ensure accreditations, regulatory requirements, and compliance reviews further the mission of the organization and service line.

Coordinate the operation of the Heart and Vascular Service line through a matrix reporting environment that encompasses the Cardiology Clinic, Invasive and Non-invasive Cardiology Services, and the Inpatient Cardiovascular Services. Working with the CNO, CMO, the President of AMG, and the Admin Director of CV Services, creates a seamless continuum of care for cardiovascular patients as they move through the various levels of care at Augusta Health.

  • Hold self and staff accountable for delivery of quality services.  Demonstrates the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with nursing, medical staff, and other hospital personnel.
  • Serves as a consultant in professional matters for personnel.
  • Demonstrates ability to supervise (applying principles of personnel management), organize, and coordinate duties of professional and non-professional personnel.
  • Demonstrates the ability to be analytical and critical in investigating, studying, and evaluating trends and developments in departmental practices and techniques.

Participates in the development, implementation and review of departmental operating policies and procedures in accordance with organizational policies and procedures and requirements of regulatory agencies.

  • Develop, evaluate, and recommend revision of standards of practice, as needed.
  • Ensures that the standards of practice are implemented and assists in the monitoring of standards as necessary.
  • Continually evaluates standards of nursing practice, policies, and procedures, by reviewing patient care records, interviewing, and observing staff and patients. Policy and procedure manual reviewed and revised at least annually.

Coordinates personnel activities to include, but not be limited to, new employee orientation, counseling, staff development opportunities.

  • Develops and maintains an appropriate orientation program for new employees and on-going education for current staff.
  • Evaluates orientation policies and procedures and recommends revision as necessary.
  • Provides input to educational program development, assuring that input from department is accurate and relevant.

Responsible for the implementation of the Heart and Vascular strategic planning initiatives. Engage in business development activities through marketing and outreach strategies. Develop and complete comprehensive program-specific analysis at least annually, including market share, competitive assessment, utilization, profitability, and referral channels/market potential.

Personnel Management

  • Provides/plans/maintains staffing patterns based on patient and operational needs.
  • Assesses the number and level of personnel needed to provide quality patient care and adjusts staffing assignments appropriately.
  • Schedule staff based upon patient needs and staff qualifications to provide safe effective patient care.
  • Assignment of duties is appropriate based on competency and skill of employees.

Recruits, interviews, selects, and assists in evaluation of staff in collaboration with Medical Advisor as appropriate.

  • Develops and maintains current job descriptions and standards of performance of employees reporting to this position. Job descriptions are reviewed and revised at least annually and as needed.
  • Interviews candidates for positions.
  • Recruiting and hiring practices are in accordance with Augusta Health hiring standards.
  • Evaluates assigned staff with evaluations completed within one month of evaluation due date.

In collaboration with the Admin Director of CV Services, develops and monitors a comprehensive and effective quality improvement program.

  • Establishes departmental standards of quality, productivity, and performance. Standards are established and reviewed at least annually.
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory agencies and appropriate licensing/accrediting agencies in areas of service and personnel. Plans and implements action needed to comply with all regulatory and accrediting agencies.
  • Participates on assigned hospital quality improvement teams and disseminates information to staff appropriately and in a timely manner.
  • Plan ways to solve identified problems within the department and to make improvements in the delivery of patient care.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of problem-solving techniques and activities implemented to improve services.
  • Directs, supervises, and participates in implementing planned changes and activities to improve service in collaboration with the Admin Director of CV Services.
  • Ensures the assessment of activities of the department, reviewing audit and QCC information as appropriate.

Fiscal Management

  • Maintains optimal, cost-effective delivery of services.
  • Actively participates in the planning and development of a realistic annual departmental budget, based on projected needs of patients served.
  • Recommends budget information to administration for capital expenditures, operating expenses, and revenue.
  • Participates in the development of a business plan for any new services.
  • Demonstrates fiscal responsibility as evidenced by monthly productivity and responsibility reports for the department that are in-line with projected outcomes.
  • Consistently seeks to identify areas for improving cost containment and cost reduction.
