This is the most senior position in its classification. This position is responsible for operating specialty and heavy equipment in a safe and effective manner.  This position may be responsible for operating fuel truck and transporting fuels to and from the worksite and ensure safety of those nearby. The engineering equipment operator III handles most complex work activities using heavy equipment which may include trucks, front-end loaders, dozers, graders, compactors, snow blowers and other specialty equipment used for paving and surfacing asphalt driveways, walk behind concrete saw, single drum rollers and other pieces of equipment as assigned. The Engineering Equipment Operator III is also responsible for cleaning, maintaining, and securing all equipment as directed by legislation, policies and procedures.
  • Operates specialty equipment used for paving and surfacing asphalt driveways, walk behind concrete saw, single drum rollers and other pieces of equipment in a safe and effective manner in order to minimize the risk of injury, property damage or loss of life.
  • Operates heavy equipment on public roadways to perform construction/maintenance of road system, drainage system, as well as sidewalk and right-of-way while maintaining proper awareness of ones surroundings. Performs pre-winter, winter, spring and summer maintenance on roads.
  • Perform daily maintenance checks; clean heavy equipment as scheduled and/or required. Maintains inventory and advises supervisor of any requirement for maintenance or repairs.
  • Trains and leads the work of others as directed by the supervisor.
POSITION SPECIFIC DUTIES MAY INCLUDE:
  • Operating fuel truck and transporting fuels to and from the worksite and ensure safety of those nearby.
  • Handling the most complex work activities using specialty and/or heavy equipment
  • Types of equipment, percentages of equipment use and areas of assignment may vary. 

 
Education:    High School Diploma or GED
Experience:  Two (2) years of experience performing duties associated with the care of either trucks, front-end loaders, dozers, graders, compactors, snow blowers and other specialty equipment used for paving and surfacing asphalt driveways, such as a walk behind concrete saw, single drum rollers and other pieces of equipment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
 
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of truck and equipment safety.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of road construction and maintenance techniques.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of equipment cleaning standards and procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of operation of front-end loaders, dozers, graders, compactors, snow blowers and other specialty equipment used for paving and surfacing asphalt driveways, such as a walk behind concrete saw and single drum rollers.
  • Ability to operate single axle trucks in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Ability to read, and write to record pickups and maintain daily records.
  • Ability to work independently or as a team member successfully.

Certification: 
  • Ability to obtain IMSA Work Zone Safety or Flagging Certification within 12 months.
  • Ability to obtain the Georgia Soil Erosion Certification 1A within 18 months of employment.
  • Acquiring a Heavy Equipment Operator's Journeyman Certificate is a plus.
Licensing:
  • Must have a valid CDL class "B" driver's license with a good driving history. 
  • Ability to obtain a class "A" CDL driver's license within 6 months of employment.
 
 
  • Requires staff call up in an emergency situation.
  • Involves more than 50% travel from office to other locations.

  • Physical Abilities: Tasks involve the regular and sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and prolonged sitting, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).
  • Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
  • Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to such adverse environmental conditions as high pressure gas & water lines, insects, poisonous plants, animals, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, toxic agents, electric currents, disease, raw sewage, blood, or pathogenic substances.
