Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly experienced and organized Chemistry and Hematology General Supervisor to oversee operations in a high-volume reference laboratory in Louisville, KY. This role involves direct supervision of testing personnel, ensuring quality control, performing diagnostic testing, and maintaining regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate has strong technical skills with chemistry and hematology analyzers, leadership experience, and a commitment to laboratory excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
Supervision & Lab Oversight
- Provide daily supervision of chemistry and hematology testing staff and lab operations.
- Set a professional example for staff and provide guidance and support to team members.
- Ensure all testing personnel are trained, competent, and operate in compliance with lab protocols.
- Participate in hiring, training, evaluations, and ongoing competency assessments.
Diagnostic Testing & Instrumentation
- Perform routine and complex diagnostic testing, including calibration and quality control.
- Operate and troubleshoot chemistry and hematology analyzers (Ortho Vitros and Sysmex preferred).
- Prepare blood smears and perform manual differentials when necessary.
- Utilize Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and analyzer software for test entry and tracking.
Quality Control & Compliance
- Monitor quality assurance programs and ensure lab meets or exceeds CLIA and CAP standards.
- Review QC data, validate instrument performance, and document preventative and corrective actions.
- Ensure SOPs are followed and updated as needed.
- Participate in and assign proficiency testing and continuing education activities.
Operations & Communication
- Manage inventory of lab supplies, including PPE, reagents, and consumables.
- Conduct and document preventative maintenance on lab equipment.
- Evaluate and respond to quality indicators such as turnaround time, specimen rejections, and QC failures.
- Respond to and document client complaints; communicate effectively with lab personnel and client services.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Education & Certification:
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field.
- Board certification as a Medical Technologist (ASCP or equivalent).
- Experience:
- Minimum 4 years of experience in a CLIA-licensed clinical laboratory.
- Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience preferred.
- Skills:
- Proficiency with chemistry and hematology instrumentation and LIS software.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong critical thinking, organization, and time management abilities.
- Understanding of laboratory statistics and quality improvement measures.
- Ability to recognize exposure risks and enforce safety protocols (OSHA, HIPAA).
