Post Doctoral Research Associate

NSF’s NOIRLab is the preeminent US national center for ground-based, nighttime optical and infrared astronomy. The mission of NOIRLab is to enable breakthrough discoveries in astrophysics by developing and operating state-of-the-art ground-based observatories and providing data products and services for a diverse and inclusive community. NOIRLab operates as a matrix organization, providing services across a range of programs: Gemini, Rubin, MSO (CTIO and KPNO), and CSDC; with approximately 400 employees at facilities in three geographic locations: Arizona, Hawai’i, and Chile.

The Post Doctoral Research Associate will conduct scientific research using JWST NIRCam and MIRI observations of the star forming region N159 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The Post Doctoral Research Associate will work in close collaboration with CoIs at Gemini, JPL, and STScI to the processing and photometry the data to characterize the early evolution of metal poor pre-main sequence stars under the UV radiation of emerging massive stars, the effect of photoevaporation on circumstellar disks and embedded young stellar objects, and how emerging massive stars clusters affect the chemical properties of the interstellar medium at low metallicity.

Essential Functions:

• Align NIRCam and MIRI data to a common reference frame.

• Reprocess all data through the JWTS calibration pipeline.

• Perform PSF-photometry and artificial star testing and produce multiband stellar and YSO catalogs.

• Compare photometry catalogs to stellar and YSO evolutionary models to understand the evolution of the region, with particular focus on the medium and narrowband filters to identify jets and accretion phenomena, presence of PAH and ice.

Required Education/Experience/Skills/Abilities:

• PhD in astronomy

• Programming experience with Python

• Experience in studies of stellar evolution or ISM characterization

• Experience with SED fitting is highly desirable

• Prior experience with reducing HST or JWST data

• Prior experience with PSF photometry is highly desirable

• Self-motivate, independent, and highly organized

• Some travel may be necessary in or outside the contiguous United States.

Salary Range: $65,000 - $72,000. The final salary will depend on skills, qualifications and experience.
