Do you have a passion for working with exotic mammals and creating unforgettable guest experiences? We’re looking for a dedicated and enthusiastic Animal Keeper to join our Mammal Department. This role involves hands-on care of animals, training, enrichment, and engaging with guests during educational encounters.
Key Responsibilities:
- Train animals for public encounters and medical behaviors using positive reinforcement techniques
- Develop and implement enrichment activities to promote animal well-being
- Prepare daily diets and maintain clean, organized animal holding areas
- Observe animal health and behavior, reporting concerns promptly
- Maintain accurate daily records and logs
- Assist in the movement, capture, and restraint of animals
- Support animal health procedures in collaboration with veterinary staff
- Answer guest questions about animals and their care
- Report any injuries, illnesses, or unusual behavior to management
- Perform basic exhibit maintenance and repairs under supervision
- Help train and guide interns and volunteers
- Lead public presentations, animal encounters, school tours, birthday parties, and media events
- Administer medication and monitor animal health as directed
Desired Skills & Experience:
- Excellent safety awareness, attention to detail, and observational skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication abilities with both guests and team members
- Experience working with exotic mammals (e.g., lemurs, sloths, kinkajous, tamanduas)
- Background in animal husbandry, operant conditioning, enrichment, and nutrition
- Knowledge of disease recognition, food prep, and environmental maintenance
- Physically capable of lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing, stooping, and being on your feet for extended periods
- Ability to follow husbandry protocols precisely and without deviation
- Positive, team-oriented mindset with a strong willingness to learn
