The organization continues to innovate best practices to save lives and teaches its renowned lifesaving model through American Pets Alive!, APA!’s national division. In 2020, AmPA! began the Human Animal Support Services (HASS) project, a collaborative movement of more than 10,000 animal welfare professionals working in nearly 1,900 organizations. Austin Pets Alive! works through American Pets Alive! to expand Austin’s life-saving model throughout the nation. Part of this includes facilitating the relocation of animals from our under-resourced partner shelters to communities with more life-saving capacity.
About The Position:
The Rescue Coordinator plans life-saving transports and liaises between sending Texas shelters and destination partners. This position will engage with partners nationally, and coordinates the logistics of safe transport of animals both in and out of Texas. In addition to the coordination work, this position requires physical hands-on work such as animal care, feeding, cleaning, loading and unloading dogs and cats in the transport vehicles, and administering medications. The Rescue Coordinator plays an instrumental role to ensure that APA! is a supportive and impactful partner to our shelter partners in Texas. The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic problem solver that enjoys a blend of logistical coordination and hands-on work with the animals. This position will be part of a dedicated team that is on the front lines of building a national transport model, and embracing innovative solutions to save more lives.
- Coordinates rescue placement logistics with sending TX shelters and national rescue organizations.
- Support animal care duties such as but not limited to: setting up and cleaning kennels, feeding and providing fresh water, scooping litter boxes, providing outings for dogs, disinfecting transport kennels between trips.
- Create transport rosters with out of state rescue partners, and facilitate the selection of dogs/cats as transport candidates.
- Coordinate the logistics, including details and dates, of safe transport to destination partners both in and out of Texas. (Will require occasional work outside of regular shelter hours).
- Assist Medical staff with physical exams, fill and administer medications, run diagnostic tests, and other treatments as necessary for transport animals.
- Maintain the APA! Shelter calendar, logging transports, and ensuring organization-wide communication of transport initiatives and priorities.
- Prepare transport paperwork and ensure all animal records are entered into the shelter database system.
- Send records to and receive records from APA! partner shelters, and provide personality and medical info on pet passengers.
- In the event of a natural disaster (ex: winter storm, hurricane, etc) this position will be expected to help lead rescue efforts along with APA! And AmPA!. This could include communication with affected shelters, organizing national transport efforts, managing volunteers, coordinating donations, driving to affected shelters, and other duties as assigned.
- SCHEDULE: Tuesday - Saturday, typical hours 10am-6pm. Built-in flexibility for overnight flight shifts and early morning transport load up times.

- Animal care experience preferred, but not required
