Summary
The Senior Database Administrator will be responsible for building and maintaining database systems and ensuring data security in our firm. Your role will also entail troubleshooting issues in our database management software and providing quick resolution
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Database Administration
- Install, configure, upgrade and maintain SQL Servers, databases, and related components
- Implement and manage database security, user permissions, roles and access controls
- Perform database backups and restores to ensure data integrity and availability
- Monitor database performance, optimize queries and tune the server for optimal performance
- Implement and manage high availability and disaster recovery solutions like clustering, mirroring, log shipping etc.
- Automate routine tasks like backups, index maintenance etc. using scripts and SQL Server Agent jobs
- Develop and implement roadmaps in collaboration with data and application teams to migrate on-premise SQL Server solutions to equivalent or better cloud-native services
- Develop database server version control policies and implement them
- Database Development
- Work with application developers to design and implement new databases or modify existing ones
- Implement data modeling techniques and database normalization
- Review and implement DDL scripts from application development teams to ensure acceptable performance and data integrity
- Assist developers with complex queries, query tuning, and schema refinements
- Support and Maintenance
- Implement and maintain monitoring solutions to support critical databases and database processes, including routine maintenance jobs, backup jobs, testing backup viability via automated restores and validation
- Troubleshoot and resolve database issues in a timely manner
- Implement third-party application database update scripts
- Apply patches, updates, and implement security best practices
- Maintain documentation for database objects, processes, and procedures
- Provide training and knowledge transfer to other team members
- Proactively monitor SQL Server maintenance tasks, troubleshoot failed processes, and address issues as soon as possible
- Implement database backup and recovery methods, database access security and integrity, physical data storage design, and data storage administration in a way that meets business Recovery Point Objectives (RPO)
Education and Experience
- A bachelor's degree, preferably in computer science or a related discipline.
- At least 5 years of experience as an enterprise SQL Server DBA.
- Strong preference will be given to persons with Azure DBA certifications (e.g. Azure Database Administrator Associate)
- At least 2 years supporting Windows failover cluster-based Always-on HA architecture in production
- At least 5 years of experience developing and supporting reports and packages with SSRS and SSIS.
- At least one year of experience migrating SQL Server HA architecture to highly available serverless compute Azure native SQL database Service
- At least one year of experience supporting highly available enterprise-scale Azure native SQL database services in production
- At least 3 years of experience supporting enterprise data warehouse environments
- Exposure to PostgreSQL, Vertica DB and/or MongoDB (Atlas) is a strong plus
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen eye for detail.
