The Role
Summary Of Job Description
The Safety Manager works with the various departments within the organization in support of AvalonBay’s Corporate Safety and Health program to ensure compliance with municipal, state, and federal safety and health regulations. This role is responsible for overseeing and ensuring compliance with safety regulations and protocols within the organization. While assigned to a particular community, or business unit, the Safety Manger will provide additional support to additional areas within the organization as needed. The Safety Manager identifies, manages, and works to create solutions for hazardous conditions that may lead to injury, illnesses, exposure, and/or property damage. This role also supports all functions that are relevant to Safety and Health. This role is performed by an associate who through experience and credentials, can provide influence and direction to Safety processes and people.

Minimum Qualifications
Experience: 5 years of relevant experience.
Education: Related four-year degree preferred, or relevant equivalent experience.

Essential Job Functions
- Proactively promotes associate, vendor, and contractor compliance with AvalonBay safety and health policies, programs, procedures, and all municipal, state, and federal regulations.
- Builds working relationships with associates, vendors, contractors, and cross-functional business partners to foster a positive Safety culture.
- Ceases work when there is an immediate danger to life and health condition (IDLH). Works with AvalonBay associates and vendor, or contractor staff to correct IDLH conditions.
- Investigates safety and health concerns, and incidents, while ensuring that necessary information is provided to the organization, identifying root causes, and promoting corrective action(s), and tracks corrective measures until completion.
- Serves as a proactive expert in their field to work independently while anticipating and handling complex situations to achieve positive Safety outcomes.
- May have one or more direct reports to participate in their development, and lead teams, or projects. Establishes, reviews, and prioritizes goals for teams, or projects and tracks to completion.
- Analyzes Safety and incident data to identify trends. Uses information to make recommendations for improvement. Assists Safety Department, and the organization, with overall program improvement and implementation.
- Develops and delivers technical training programs for relevant Safety topics, processes, and procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience: 5 years of relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Demonstrates knowledge of safety and health principles including the ability to identify known potential exposures and recommended corrective actions.
- Demonstrates proficiency in Microsoft Office suite programs, internet inquiries, email, and regulatory websites.
- Demonstrates interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly (both verbal and written).
- Possesses working knowledge of OSHA Safety and Health regulations, national consensus standards, and municipal and state regulations governing safety and health.
- Performance of the required duties requires physical ability to climb permanent and temporary stairs, ability to climb ladders and negotiate work areas.
- Requires use of hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.
- Exhibits the ability to frequently stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb (stairs, ladders, etc.).
- Exhibits the ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE); including head protection, face protection, safety glasses, gloves, protective footwear, vest, and respiratory protection.
- Regularly work at a community, new development, or regional office.
- Travel may be required between multiple locations.
- OSHA 30
- CPR/First Aid current within 30 days of employment.
- BCSP certification is preferred.
- Satisfactory completion of AVB’s new hire orientation within 30 days of employment or the first training session offered after employment.
- Any other applicable training assigned by the Manager or Director.
