What are the responsibilities and job description for the COLLECTOR I position at Avenir Financial FCU?
Purpose
To effectively manage and control all areas of collection. The collector must be able to advise members of necessary actions and strategies for debt repayment. Performs duties in compliance with regulatory requirements including, but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
- Contacts member by telephone and mail to determine reason for default and, through consultation with member, take appropriate action to bring account current.
- Ensures all Keystone entries are logged in and followed up is conducted.
- Assign repossessions to the Repossession Agent when it is deemed appropriate, and it is determined it is the correct action.
- Ensures compliance with repossession and bankruptcy laws.
- Files bankruptcy claims and reaffirmation when appropriate.
- Collects on returned checks.
- Prepares and submits documents for small claims filing with the court.
- Prepares and submits documents for garnishments when necessary.
- Recommends closure of line of credit and VISA credit cards when necessary.
- Skip trace members when required.
- Request gap cancellations when necessary.
- Prepares and submit extension/modification requests.
- Assign accounts to Attorney to procure Avenir Financial’s collateral through court action.
- Responsible for complying with the Bank Secrecy Act policies and procedures, including attendance at annual training, as directed by the Bank Secrecy Act Officer.
- Works in the spirit of the credit union’s purpose and values.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Education/Certification
High school education or equivalent is required.
Required Experience
Minimum one-year related experience required. Previous collection experience in Credit Union, other financial institution, or collection agency is helpful. Basic knowledge of collection regulations and laws is helpful. Ability to speak and understand Spanish is strong asset.
Required Knowledge
Knowledge of collection procedures and related laws and regulations. Understanding of company policies. Familiar with default and enforcement clauses. Basic understanding of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. Understanding of small claims court system.
Skills/Abilities
Ability to operate a personal computer, including full working knowledge and ability to utilize the following software programs: Excel, Microsoft Word, and other data processing software. Strong interpersonal and communication skills required.
