AWARE is hiring caring individuals to staff our emergency shelter.
AWARE supports domestic and sexual violence victims through strength-based advocacy that promotes survivors’ unique abilities, identities, experiences and healing journey. As a shelter advocate you maintain survivors’ self-determination and safety and are a lifeline as victims seek resources for housing, physical and mental health needs, financial support and children’s issues. Our advocates provide 24/7 shelter coverage, crisis intervention, safety planning, needs assessments, referral services and education, training and outreach activities.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Agreement with and adherence to AWARE’s foundational, non-discrimination practices and our guiding mission.
- Assessment of participant’s safety needs, provide safety planning, follow-up and safety checks.
- Demonstrate trauma-informed service, recognize emergencies and act to ensure participant and staff safety.
- Use de-escalation techniques to defuse tense situations and, if needed, request law enforcement assistance.
- Self-regulate and maintain an awareness of personal triggers and reactions. Practice regular self and community care to prevent and mitigate secondary trauma.
- Assist and accompany families working with other agencies such as the Office of Children’s Services, JAHMI, etc.
- Facilitate shelter upkeep and hygiene, including room checks and regular maintenance of common spaces. Provide motivational support to residents to increase willingness and completion of communal chores.
- Maintain clear and direct communication in client electronic files.
- Enhance our supportive, dedicated team through seamless communication, cooperative teamwork, mentoring of new advocates and positive relationships with community partners.
