What are the responsibilities and job description for the CNC Department Manager position at Axiom Custom Products?
Who We Are
We are a visionary design and fabrication shop serving agencies, events, retail, construction, and anyone seeking to create extraordinary projects together. We aren’t a cabinet shop, our CNC team is not comprised of rigid machinists. We are curious and innovative, because that is what the type of work we excel at requires.
Leveraging cutting-edge digital manufacturing technologies, our deep fabrication expertise, and decades of invaluable experience, we deliver unparalleled quality products, surpassing industry standards. With our extensive in-house capabilities, we handle projects at any stage, from concept to installation. Our CNC department is five people strong and home to three 3-axis Thermwood routers, a 5-axis large-envelope Royce router, and a 7-axis Kuka robot. Our programming capabilities include: Mastercam, PowerMill and Cabinet Vision.
About The Role
The primary objective of the CNC Manager is to provide dynamic leadership and strategic oversight to our team of young and actively learning CNC programmers and operators. This means being able to oscillate between organization and structure to hold folks to standards and follow processes, but also be flexible in hectic times when that’s needed. That might be making an exception to a rule, thinking outside the box or looking at a one-off strategy or solution.
As a cornerstone, the CNC department relies on this pivotal position for expertise, resource management, training, personnel development, and stringent quality control measures. The CNC Manager must possess a strong knowledge of CNC machinery across various materials, including wood, high density foam, and plastics. They also have a deep understanding of fabrication techniques and effective project scheduling. They demonstrate interpersonal abilities and skills like excellent communication, as well as the ability to provide clear direction and set team goals. The CNC Manager intakes, plans and schedules production work then traffics work to team resources matching project requirements with individual skill sets and workloads. Once things are in full swing, they monitor individual assembly performance and course-correct when necessary, cultivating a culture of accountability. The challenge at hand is to meet production goals and in tandem manage, grow, mentor, and cross-train their team. In so doing, the team looks to the manager for guidance and goals. The manager also maintains department compliance with business processes, ERP systems, and strategic objectives. Administration will look to the manager for assistance to establish long term departmental workflow & processes. This position reports to the Head of Manufacturing and works with them in a collaborative capacity to allocate resources and ensure deadlines are being met.
Who You Are
You are an experienced, mechanically inclined leader with proven ability to train and manage a team. You bring an in-depth ability to read, analyze, and interpret drawings and teach others to do the same. You will lead a team of CNC Programmers and Operators through technical, operational and managerial excellence. A hands-on, working manager, your CAM and CNC experience let’s you jump in to program when the workload necessitates it. The rest of the time, you are highly organized and capable of working closely with members of the Projects, Purchasing, Engineering, and Fabrication teams to schedule and deliver parts to the shop floor accurately and on-time. Previous work history in a design-led industry is desired, but comprehensive knowledge of fabrication & manufacturing processes is a must. Responsible for the CNC department’s success, you have extensive technical knowledge and troubleshooting ability. You bring a strong understanding of CAM and programming and hands-on experience operating CNC machinery, such as 3-axis milling machines. You are a passionate advocate for machines and the dedicated individuals who bring them to life. You understand that feeds and speeds relate to efficiency in parts as well as managing the data that creates those parts, and the people creating that data. You are relentless in the pursuit of accuracy and efficiency. You love the idea of joining a talented team of individuals making something new every day.
Success
The CNC Manager must thrive in a dynamic work environment under high-pressure deadlines; someone that will ebb and flow with the needs of our clients, our company, and the industry. They have an insatiable curiosity to contribute to the continuous improvement and growth of the department and Axiom. Constant collaboration and adaptability to change will be key for success in this position and a high-performing work environment. You’ll know you’re succeeding when work is completed within labor-hour constraints, safely and in compliance, with timely, organized, and accurate delivery of CNC made parts. You’ve hit your marks when your team is engaged, enjoy their roles, care about the bottom line, and they stick around for the long haul.
