About The Role
The General Foreman position is responsible for on-site supervision of foremen, and all craft personnel (e.g. equipment operators, laborers, linemen, apprentices, etc.) and their activities to ensure a safe, productive, and quality job is attained and costs are controlled. Uses independent judgement in making decisions without the availability of supervision. Schedules labor, materials, tools, equipment to effectively utilize all resources. Ensures work is completed according to the specifications and contract requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide consistent leadership in the area of safety and perform field safety observations, observe work methods, and influence a positive safety culture
- Supervises and sets direction for all foremen and craft labor on-site to ensure best use of all company resources; and adherence to all company policies and state and federal regulations. Provides formal coaching feedback to foremen as well as regular informal feedback to Upper management.
- Schedules equipment, materials and tools to effectively utilize all resources and to maximize production and minimize costs after becoming familiar with scope of work and site conditions. Collaborates with superintendent on all scheduled activities.
- Responsible for safe working conditions and safety procedures on projects. Understands and enforces company, jobsite specific, federal, and state safety regulations on site and discusses concerns with Superintendent.
- Communicates with Superintendent to update him on project problem areas and the specific status of the project.
- Collaborates with Superintendent to plan for manpower needs and proper staffing (hiring, promoting, disciplining, terminating)
- Compares labor and equipment production and efficiency to the job estimate and informs the Superintendent of cost over-runs and the utilization of company resources.
- Mentors Field Foremen on work discipline, production costs, scope of work, quality, and safety.
- Work closely with the Human Resources and Safety & Training Departments to schedule and support training and employee development plans for positions areas employees
- Serve as a professional point of contact for customers, potential customers and storm restoration mobilizations
Key Qualifications
- High school diploma or Equivalent (GED)
- Eight years of applicable electrical utility and/or electrical contractor industry experience
- Thorough understanding of electric utility safety and operational procedures
- Extensive knowledge of transmission and distribution power systems, operating methods, construction, maintenance, switching, safety, tools, equipment and work methods
- Good written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and management
- Ability to become proficient in use of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel and Power Point)
- Strong organizational leadership skills; ability to work with others without direct authority
- Excellent reading comprehension and interpretation abilities
- Problem solving skills
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
Key Nice-To-Haves
- Four years of related supervisory experience as a distribution foreman
Key Info
This position is primarily field based, but office work is necessary, while in the field performing the duties of this job, the employee is infrequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration, and extreme weather conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Hours of work are typically 50 hours per week but are dependent upon the needs of the job. This position frequently requires long hours.
Travel
This position is frequently required to travel overnight within the workweek to meet with customers and develop/maintain relationships with field personnel. Extended-length travel may be necessary to support storm restoration efforts.
