JOB SUMMARY:
The HVAC Mechanic installs, services, and repairs environmental-control systems in office and industrial facilities, utilizing knowledge of refrigeration theory, pipefitting, and structural layout, troubleshoots, repairs, and installs chilled water systems. This work will be performed at the United States Coastguard (USCG) Training Center in Yorktown, VA.
This position is with Brevard Achievement Center Enterprises (BACE), which is a subsidiary of Brevard Achievement Center (BAC).
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The list of essential functions below is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this job. Other duties may be assigned based on business needs.
- Installing, maintaining and repairing ventilation and air conditioning systems and equipment.
- Installs and repairs hydronic systems.
- Performs preventive maintenance on HVAC equipment.
- Uses diagrams, schematics, blueprints, and drawings to perform repairs and maintenance.
- Perform maintenance on hot/cold side kitchen equipment including walk-in cooler and freezer. Maintain the scheduling of repairs with kitchen POCs to minimize downtime of equipment during serving hours.
- Installs and cleans air and water filters.
- Installs and repairs low temperature refrigeration systems.
- Installs and programs thermostats.
- Fabricates, assembles, and installs ductwork and chassis parts.
- Connect motors, compressors, controls, and fans to control panels, and control panels to power source.
- Interacts directly with the customer, determining their needs and informing them of progress.
- Ensures completed work meets quality control standards.
- Communicate with scheduler to update the status of repairs and estimate completion dates.
- Responds to customer inquiries and complaints.
- Assists with orienting and training new employees and assists in work assignments.
- Perform emergency repairs promptly and efficiently.
- Keep daily logs and records of all maintenance functions.
- Ensure compliance with appliance standards and with OSHA.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
- None
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Certification as an HVAC Mechanic.
- Must have any additional HVAC certifications required
- Minimum of at least 5 years experience on commercial heating/air conditioning/refrigeration systems and controls.
- Experience with maintenance and repairs on commercial cooking equipment.
- Must be able to pass a background screening for access to the work areas.
- Must have and maintain a valid drivers license.
- Must be able to pass a Motor Vehicle Background screening
- Must have reliable transportation.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug test.
- Ability to work after hours, weekends, overtime and emergency holidays
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Licensed by the State of Virginia as a Journeyman HVAC Mechanic
- EPA Universal Refrigerant Handling Certification preferred.
- Trane, York, or McQuay factory chiller certified.

WORK AUTHORIZATION/SECURITY CLEARANCE (IF APPLICABLE):
Government clearance required for access to work sites
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position does require the following: repetitive lifting, push/pull, carrying, walking, climbing ladders, squatting, kneeling, and prolonged standing. Will involve working in confined spaces and lifting/moving up to 50 pounds. Reasonable accommodations, when practical, can be offered to accomplish the above requirements.
SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Tasks are regularly performed inside and outside with some exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, heat, cold, rain, fumes).
- Will need to use any personal protective (safety) equipment as designated properly and consistently.
- Involves exposure to hazardous materials.
- Some tasks may be performed independently with little supervision.
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Tasks require manual dexterity, in addition to visual and hearing acuity.
