Special Education Paraprofessional Job Description
This role is responsible for assisting the special education services teacher in providing instructional and support services for maximum student achievement. The paraprofessional will assist the teacher in planning and implementing learning experiences for pre-kindergarten students, developing a safe and healthy learning environment, and providing small group instruction.

Responsibilities
- Present lessons or portions of lessons to students, checking accuracy of work and presenting additional assignments as directed by the teacher.
- Help students use books, computers, classroom materials, and other equipment.
- Assist the teacher in keeping routine records related to attendance, grades, test scores, or behavior as assigned.
- Transfer students in and out of holding or locomotive devices and on and off buses.
- Assist students with toileting, which may include diapering and lifting on and off the toilet, changing tables and mats.
- Assist with movement of students with special needs as required (positioning, lifting, transferring, and physical intervention).
- Obtain food from the cafeteria, serve food, and feed students or help them feed themselves.
- Assist teachers in maintaining discipline and encouraging acceptable student behavior.
- Manage student behavior, including crisis intervention when needed, within approved procedures and guidelines.
- Facilitate students' use of mobility equipment such as leg braces, walkers, mobile standers, and tricycles.
- Assist teachers on field trips, helping students with physical needs, maintaining discipline, and reinforcing learning situations.
- Assist bus drivers in maintaining discipline and responding to students' physical needs.
- Provide adult assistance on special education buses as assigned.
- Direct activities and act as a play leader for assigned groups of students.
- Perform basic health, first aid, or basic nursing care for special education students as directed or authorized by a school nurse.
- Supervise students in the temporary absence of the responsible teacher.
- Implement behavior management plans consistent with teacher instructions.
- Adjust or rephrase texts and classroom instruction.
- Attend IEP meetings if requested.
- Transfer with a student to another educational setting when requested, following system policies and state law.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters.
- Demonstrate initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement.
- Work cooperatively with supervisors and staff to implement the system's vision, goals, and strategies.
- Engage in professional growth and demonstrate professional ethics and effective leadership.
- Report potential problems, unusual events, or work irregularities to administrative personnel.
- Respond to inquiries, requests, feedback, concerns, and complaints in a timely and positive manner.
- Maintain and submit reports, records, and correspondence accurately and on time.
