Pay Schedule VI, Grade 29, Regular schedule 40 hours per week

A vacancy exists in the Department of Public Works and Transportation, Bureau of Highways & Equipment Maintenance.

Examples of Duties

Definition of Responsibility

Under general supervision, supervises the repair, maintenance, and rebuilding of gas and diesel powered heavy trucks, construction equipment, emergency apparatus, generators, and related mechanical, pumping and hydraulic components.

Examples Of Essential Duties

  • Plans, assigns, and supervises the maintenance, repair, and rebuilding of heavy trucks, wheel and track construction equipment, and hydraulic systems. Supervises the repair and maintenance of fire apparatus and equipment. Assigns and reviews the work of helpers and mechanics. Provides technical assistance to mechanics. Receives, prioritizes, and schedules work orders.
  • Prepares and maintains equipment maintenance schedules. Develops and revises maintenance and repair procedures and policies. Recommendsadaptationstoimproveequipmentperformance.Coordinatesvehicle and equipment recalls and the transportation of equipment to and from repair facilities.
  • Recommends equipment replacement due to age or deteriorating performance. Recommends removal of underused equipment. Inspects trade-in equipment for possible replacement parts. Coordinates the sale of obsolete equipment. Receives new equipment. Reviews specifications and in-services new equipment.

OR

  • Plans, coordinates, and supervises welding and blacksmithing work in the repair and maintenance of automotive, construction, mechanical, pumping, and hydraulic equipment. Supervises and participates in the fabrication of simple and complex metal components and fixtures.
  • Plans, lays out, and participates in major or unique custom modifications and repairs. Resolves complex welding and blacksmithing repair problems.
  • Brazes, solders, makes flame and arc cuts, and hardens or grinds surfaces. Uses a variety of gas and electric arc welding equipment. Operates machine tools to fabricate bolts, pins, washers, and related metal parts. Sharpens and maintains tools and equipment.

In BOTH options duties include

  • Perform estimates of time and materials required for jobs. Orders and plans for the delivery of parts and materials. Coordinates contractual work. Prepares and maintains work records. Prepares routine reports.

Examples Of Other Duties

  • May serve on departmental committees. Conducts team meetings for workgroups.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

Six years' experience in heavy truck and construction equipment repair and maintenance, including diesel engines and heavy track systems or six years' experience in welding-blacksmith work with at least two years' experience at the journeyman level. (Related training may be substituted on a year-for­ year basis up to a maximum of two years for the required experience.)

Licenses and Certificates

Some positions may require possession of a valid driver’s license equivalent to a commercial, class B or class A Maryland driver’s license and a current Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations. (License may require endorsements and/or the absence of certain restrictions.)

Applicants are required to submit proof of Licenses, Certifications and Education beyond high school to meet the required and preferred qualifications of the position. Diplomas or transcripts must show the applicant’s major field of study. Copies and unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

EXAMINATION PROCEDURE

Physical and Environmental Conditions

The work of this classification may entail the performance of heavy physical labor, including bending, stooping, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and the operation of vehicles, machinery, tools, and equipment and exposure to adverse weather conditions. Some positions require exposure to potentially hazardous conditions such as noxious fumes, flames, and flying sparks.

Medical Examination and Employment Background Investigation

Applicants selected for employment with Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination, drug screening and employment investigation, including, but not limited to criminal background, education certification and fingerprinting checks.

Salary

Annual Salary review - Step increases may be granted on anniversary date based on satisfactory job performance

General Increases - Cost of living increases and adjustments may be granted as legislated.

Longevity Increases - In accordance with the specific pay schedule, a full-time merit or classified employee may receive a longevity increase, equivalent to one step, upon completion of a certain number of years of classified service with the County.

Health Insurance

Benefits
