JOB TITLE: Major League Mental Performance Coach
DEPARTMENT: Strength & Performance
REPORTS TO: Head of Strength & Performance
JOB SUMMARY: The Baltimore Orioles are seeking a full time Mental Performance Coach for the 2025 Major League Baseball Championship season. This coach will be responsible for the implementation, collaboration, and supervision of the Baltimore Orioles mental skills program for the Major League team.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Primary duties to include, but not limited to, the following:
- Develop strong relationships and connections with Major League players, coaches, and staff to help improve mental health, mental skills, and mental performance to help achieve organizational on-field performance goals.
- Build a mental performance system that develops coaches and staff while growing mental skills in players that fosters the culture of mental health and performance for the club.
- Incorporate personality, cognitive, and/or emotional quotient assessments as needed to help provide feedback and improve staff and players’ ability to understand themselves and each other, along with how they react to stress.
- Assist the coaching staff and supporting departments in utilizing mental performance information to improve efficiency of communication and provide quality to help build better plans for players.
- Attend team activities and meetings during spring training, regular season, and postseason to drive mental performance initiatives and implement mental performance programming.
- Develop and coordinate individual and group meetings with Major League Field Coordinator and Major League coaching staff to emphasize the implementation of mental performance initiatives.
- Assist the players, Major League Manager, and coaching staff with sensitive situations and mental performance topics that arise within the team.
- Provide dynamic, research-driven approaches to shape mindfulness, relentlessness, leadership, and team culture with all members of the Major League Club and Major League coaching staff.
- Work closely with Performance and Medical staff to positively affect holistic habits involving—but not limited to—sleep, nutrition, recovery, routines, and stress management.
- Understand the scope and limitations of the Sports Psychology department and the Team Doctors. Provide appropriate referrals to the team’s Employee Assistance Program and other licensed medical professionals, as needed.
- Work in partnership with the Employee Assistance Program and Medical department professionals to stay up to date on MLB initiatives, latest research, and synergistic goals for the 2025 season.
- Communicate to Major League staff on progress of mental skills throughout the year as it relates to performance, collaboration, and themes.
- Effectively operate with other mental performance coaches in the organization to contribute to relevant curriculum, initiatives, themes, player movement, and goals within the department.
- Provide in person care and collaboration with mental skills staff for rehabbing players throughout their process of return to play to create the best experience for player development during this time.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- Master’s degree in Sport Psychology; or equivalent degree in professional counseling
- Strong knowledge and experience with elite athletes within the baseball setting.
- Adhere to the American Psychological Association (APA) and AASP code of ethics.
- Adhere to Baltimore Orioles Organization Policies and Procedures
- Be a strong communicator of philosophy, goals, and subjects of the mental performance department to major league staff to ensure synergistic collaboration and great communication.
- Strong purpose, motivation, and work ethic to work long, flexible hours including weekend and holidays.
- Ability to collaborate with a medical department environment and comply with all confidentiality requirements.
- Ability to operate within a major league coaching staff in an integrated and professional manner.
Preferred:
- Bilingual in Spanish/English is preferred.
- Possess CMPC, or ability to work towards certification; mentorship can be provided.
- Prior baseball playing background or experience in professional baseball.
