Summary | Are you a new Captain with a 50-ton or higher license and looking for a career change or point-of-entry in a booming industry?  Are you a retired Captain and looking for supplemental income with a company that is accommodating to your schedule?  Do you "follow the sun" on your own boat and need an east coast stop and a part-time job?  You may have found it with the Baltimore Water Taxi!  We are looking for qualified candidates to fulfill the role of a "Captain" on board a Water Taxi.  


What does a Water Taxi Captain do?  


A Water Taxi Captain is a senior navigational officer and front-line representative whose primary responsibility is the safety of their assigned vessel, crew, and embarked/ing passengers.  The Captain has the secondary responsibility of managing embarked crew and ensuring customers have a positive experience.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES | Include but are not limited to the following:



  • Responsibility for the safety of passengers and adherence to the sailing schedule

  • Operate his/her vessel at speeds consistent with safety, prevailing conditions, and posted limits

  • Exercise sound judgment and prudent seamanship at all times

  • Follow proper policies and procedures for start-up, operations, and shutdown, paying close attention to adverse weather conditions present/forecasted in the operating area

  • Responsibility for participating, logging, and completing mandated crew drills/training sessions

  • Maintain exceptional familiarity with the handling characteristics, policies, and procedures of each vessel in the BWT fleet with a focus on safety

  • Conduct frequent and detailed checks of operational, structural, and navigational equipment before, during, and after operations

  • Direct responsibility for the conduct of the crew under their command with a focus on safety, security, appearance, customer service, and brand representation

  • Responsibility for performing and overseeing daily preventative maintenance

  • Perform other duties as assigned by management

  • MENTOR & DEVELOP Crew using a supportive and collaborative approach through the monitoring of performance and issuing of relative and actionable feedback

  • Ensure COMPLIANCE with relevant regulations pertaining to maritime transportation and personnel safety (such as OSHA, USCG, and DOT rules and regulations in the United States)


REQUIREMENTS | The Captain must:


  • Possess United States Coast Guard License to operate passenger vessels of 50 Gross Registered Tons on Inland Waters

  • Possess a TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credentials)

  • Consent to random drug and alcohol screenings and security/background checks

  • Possess a valid First Aid/CPR certification

  • Be willing to work flexible hours as required by the schedule or as directed by management

  • Possess excellent interpersonal skills, a neat and clean appearance, and a willingness to follow instructions

  • Be able to tread water for at least 5 minute

  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent



REQUIREMENTS | The Captain must:


  • Possess a valid driver’s license

  • Have the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and come to valid conclusions

  • Be physically able, without assistance, to lift at least a 40-lb load off the ground, and to carry, push, or pull the sam


QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Passion for a mission to “create nautical mini-adventures that uniquely connect the charms of the city”

  • Minimum 2 years of commercial passenger vessel operations

  • Demonstrated an understanding of for-profit management; experience in a maritime transportation context preferred

  • Inspiring leadership skills, including demonstrated experience in building and leading high-performing teams in a competitive environment

  • Excellent communication skills with an emphasis on conflict de-escalation

  • Ability to be effective working independently as well as collaboratively with diverse teams; ability to adapt effectively to a changing work environment

  • An excellent team player with strong interpersonal skills

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK | Full-time, part-time, and seasonal work available; evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand

 

REQUIRED EDUCATIONAL AND WORK EXPERIENCE | United States Coast Guard License; High school diploma with at least 2 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience

 

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE | Operating Commercial Passenger Vessels of 50 Gross Registered Tons; Maritime Transportation; Small Business; Customer Service

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY | This position is responsible for the direct leadership of all crewmembers embarked and/or in support of the vessels under the Captains command


PAY | We use a pay scale with the first-year rate for licensed Captains with little to no commercial passenger experience at $20 per hour. For those Captains who possess commercial passenger experience, we are willing to negotiate a higher starting rate. We define "experience" as 3 years of operating a commercial passenger vessel(s).
