Title: Associate Director: Real Estate Engineering, Construction and Development

Location: Charlotte, NC / El Segundo, CA

Job Summary

As a member of the Development and Engineering team, the successful candidate will provide technical oversight of transactions and operating properties across the Barings Equity and Debt portfolios. In addition to assisting with the management of the in-house and third-party regional engineering teams, will be responsible for establishing key performance measures for the group, developing tools for measurement, and driving performance. She/he will work together with Head of Development and Engineering as well as the leadership team and heads of Asset Management, and Acquisitions, to create an engineering focus that drives efficiencies across the debt and equity business. Candidate should have strong consultant relationships throughout the real estate industry, a strong background in hands-on debt originations, at-risk development and equity acquisitions across asset classes, and proven track record of leadership and building of culture. Charlotte or Los Angeles are the preferred locations, but willing to be flexible for the right candidate.

Primary Responsibilities

• Assistance in the management and oversight of the Engineering function within the USREE business including creation, refinement, and implementation of strategy, management of the engineering team.
• Oversight of due diligence protocols, refine and expand existing engineering database and on-line tools to improve efficiencies, assistance in developing and refining operating guidelines, and drive and expand the firm’s sustainability programs.
• Responsibility for managing engineering and environmental due diligence for a portfolio of debt originations, construction lending, at-risk developments, equity acquisitions and ongoing capital improvement projects for the equity and debt portfolios.
• Participation as a member of the Development and Engineering team in setting group goals and objectives and in preparing and implementing tactical plans to meet these goals.
• Maintain appropriate professional affiliations and memberships.
  
  
  

Qualifications

• Registered professional engineer or architect with at least 6-8 years of progressive responsibility and experience in major commercial building design, construction techniques, code compliance, sustainability, seismic assessment and environmental site assessments.
• Direct experience with ground-up commercial real estate development, including the ability to critically review project programs, schedules and budgets.
• Understanding of engineering procedures in support of mortgage underwriting, construction lending, at-risk development and equity acquisitions.
• Exceptional engineering and analytical skills with the ability to teach, articulate and communicate to variety of audiences inside, as well as outside of the organization.
• Proven experience in creatively and collaboratively working through technical challenges and conflicts
• Experience within a fiduciary environment a plus.
• Must be able to communicate effectively with Senior Management and internal business partners.
• A positive attitude, strong work ethic, with a team player approach, and a desire to work collaboratively across the organization.
• Must possess a high standard of professionalism and integrity.
• Able and willing to travel when needed, particularly as necessary to effectively manage the due diligence process for important transactions – approximately 20% travel is required.
• Strong written and verbal presentation skills.
• Highly organized and able to prioritize and meet tight schedules.
